The cultural-educational programme “Student Philharmonic” is the University’s pride and a high-status project. It was established in 2004 at the initiative of S.R. Ljuter at Ƶ.
The project “Student Philharmonic” is a subscription series of educational concerts. Each concert programme includes an educational lecture given by a professional musicologist and a musical part in which classical music is performed. The unique programme is developed for each concert and these programmes are further joined in symphonic, vocal, piano and other cycles. At the beginning of the concert, a musical expert delivers the introductory speech containing musicological and historical commentary which equips students with holistic and comprehensive knowledge of a particular cultural epoch or the works of an outstanding composer.
“Student Philharmonic” concerts feature the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Paulavičius Youth Symphony Orchestra, Concert Chamber Orchestra of the Rimsky-Korsakov School of Music, St. Petersburg State Capella Choir, St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, Male Choir of St. Petersburg. Many famous musicians granted with the title “People's Artist of the Russian Federation”, honored artists from the best musical organisations, winners of famous competitions, the principal singers and ballet dancers of the Mariinsky Theatre and Mikhailovsky Theatre, the principal instrumentalists of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and talented young performers of the leading schools also take part in the concerts.
The main goal of the Student Philharmonic Society project is to popularise classical music and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of age, aesthetic preferences and social status. It is also an important target to introduce academic music culture to the students of St. Petersburg, so it is symbolic that the project was born within the walls of one of the most respected universities of St. Petersburg (Leningrad). In the future, with the further development of the project, the artistic leadership of the "Student Philharmonic" has set an ambitious goal: to make Ƶ the centre of student-music life of the city. There are objective prerequisites for this, and they are taken into account by the project leaders with the full support of the university administration.
The main result of more than fifteen years of the project's activity is the creation and active functioning of a full-fledged philharmonic organisation on the basis of Ƶ with a magnificent concert hall in the city center, a clear, well-thought-out and very active repertoire policy, including many concerts of various genres of classical music, from chamber and vocal concert performance to the presentation of full-fledged opera performances by various musical institutions. Over the years, the Student Philharmonic Society has also built up a large ‘core’ of regular audiences who actively attend all the concerts of the project and, importantly, actively interact with the artistic leadership of the project. A great role in this is played by a well-established relationship between the artistic directorate and veteran, student and social organisations. All this was possible due to a deep understanding of the importance and significance of the socio-cultural, creative and, most importantly, educational goals and objectives described above.
