Eva Esakova, a student of the Institute of Costume Design, came to Saint-Petersburg from Estonia. In spring Eva will graduate from University, but in the meantime she is working on the launch of her own clothing brand of maternity and children clothing,
Eva, from the age of 12 you were dreaming about studying in Saint-Petersburg. Tell us, how did this dream come about?
Me and my parents always traveled a lot, mostly in Europe and Asia. Finally, at the age of 12 they brought me to Russia. We only spent four days in Saint-Petersburg, but I fell in love with the city immediately! I left the city in tears, told my parents that I would certainly come back and study and live here. And there’s nothing surprising about that, my love for this city is in my blood. My grandfather is from Saint-Petersburg, he often told me stories about his youth, his studying, his first love. Grandpa is very proud that I chose his hometown to study in. Truly, he wanted me to follow his steps, he is a sailor. But I preferred a creative profession.
How did you find out about the University of Industrial Technologies and Design?
I went to art school and I knew for a long time that I want to be creative, work with my hands. One of my acquaintances, who was also going to study in Russia, told me about SUITD. I thought at that time: «Wow, what an interesting university she found!» And I decided that this university is the place where I wanted to go. I looked through educational programs of the university, tried on different professions and, when I came across a fashion designer, I realized that it was about me!
What are you fondest memories about the university?
In the first year we went to shows where students showed their graduation collections. It was very motivating. In those moments I was proud that I studied here. I was watching and thinking: these are yesterday's freshmen, who just recently were learning to sew, and now they are showing their work, which was born from just one idea, embodied thanks to the university.
Once I also managed to take part in a fashion show. During my internship I sewed a funny foxy fabric shirt and the teachers chose it for a fashion show in one of the cultural and exhibition centers in the city. I doubted myself and thought the shirt wasn’t worth anyone looking at. Besides, I couldn’t find a model, so I had to show it myself. But before the event I felt great support from the teachers, and after the show they said I was very good at acting not only as a designer, but also as a model, they thought I already had some experience.
Tell us, please, about your collection.
Once I saw a transparent bag in a store and thought: what if I made a transparent jacket or even a skirt? I decided to use PVC – a dense but thin waterproof and transparent material. Then I started to think about the functionality of these clothes. And so the concept of my collection was finally formed – transparent clothes for rainy weather, which on the one hand, will shelter from the rain, and on the other hand, will not hide the rest of our image. We can stay dressed up even in bad weather! My collection includes jackets, raincoats, vests, there is even one transparent skirt.
What are you planning to do after your graduation?
Right now I am on academic leave, I am living in Estonia with my child and my Estonian husband, whom I met in Russia. I will definitely get my diploma, but I am already working on a business plan to start my own brand of clothes for pregnant women and babies for up to two years. I already have the first sketches. For now I am thinking of developing the brand in my home country, because here this niche is not yet occupied and there are opportunities for a successful start. But maybe we will come back to Russia, I still love Saint-Petersburg and miss it.
