General Information

�������Ƶ was established in accordance with the resolution of the Supreme Council of the National Economy of the USSR of 26 April 1930 as Leningrad Textile Institute and was named after S. Kirov by the Presidium of the USSR Central Executive Committee on 31 August 1935. Nowadays the University holds the status of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution. The functions and powers of the founder are carried out by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

University offers 225 educational programmes in design, engineering, liberal arts, economics and education on both fee-paying and federal budget grant basis. University also provides different attendance modes:

We are a member of the Cumulus global association of art and design education and research, the European Textile Network (ETN) and the International Society for Engineering Pedagogy IGIP.

Our academic staff are highly qualified specialists with academic degrees and titles, many of whom have received state and institutional honours and awards, are members of creative unions, laureates and prize-winners of international and national competitions.

�������Ƶ holds a leading position in national and international ratings:

• In the list of best universities in the world according to the Moscow International University Ranking “The Three University Missions”;
• Second place in the RAEX ranking in the field of technologies of light industry;
• Top-100 of National university rating;
• Top-20 of National university rating for the quality of education.

Facilities and Resources

University complex comprises 11 educational buildings, most of which are located in the historical centre of the city. There are also 6 dormitory buildings designed for all international students. Modern equipment of the university departments, academic and research laboratories, lecture halls, trial plant workshops and industrial workshops of the research and production centre allows the implementation of both vocational and higher professional education programmes.

Scientific Activity

Scientists of �������Ƶ carry out fundamental and applied research and participate in a number of federal and ministry scientific programmes. University annually holds international, national and regional conferences. University is the founding editor and publisher of 6 scientific journals that are included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission:

International Activity

�������Ƶ is actively involved in international cooperation and has more than 56 bilateral agreements with foreign educational institutions. Members of the academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students of �������Ƶ participate in international conferences and internship programmes.

Our international community totals more than 1500 students from 42 countries.

The key task of the university is to provide a comfortable learning and living environment for international students.

For this purpose, the university has been actively working on the Adapters programme, which has been helping first-year students to adapt to the new conditions of the educational process and enter the new practice of social and community relations.

In 2021, the Centre for Adaptation of International Students was opened in the university. Together with the Adapters programme, the Centre holds round tables, organises work with other student associations of the university, conversation clubs, excursions, as well as helps students to comply with the requirements of the Russian Federation legislation on migration registration and visa services, and provides assistance in language adaptation.

Every year, the university implements various international interuniversity projects, educational programmes and creative events in which Russian and foreign students of the university, as well as students of partner universities take part.

Especially for international programmes we’ve developed more than 100 lecture and practical courses and professional development courses in the main educational areas of the university which are taught both in Russian and English, and are held both in class and online.

International students of the University and participants of student exchange programmes have the opportunity to learn not only about the education system in Russia, but also about the Russian culture and history, to visit numerous landmarks and to take part in practical classes in the famous museums of St. Petersburg and Russia – the Hermitage and the Russian Museum, to undergo internships in the creative workshops of famous designers.

A variety of international practice-oriented and liberal arts projects create conditions for learning how to interact in an international team, in an intercultural and interethnic environment.

In addition, during the period of the international festival of fashion, art and design, “Admiralty Needle”, invited guests – world professionals and celebrities in the field of design give lectures, seminars and masterclasses for students.

When participating in the activities of the international cultural interuniversity youth project “OPERA & PODIUM” students can not only test themselves on the training opera stage in the role of designers, costume designers, make-up artists, but also attend creative meetings with Honoured Artists of Russia, foreign cultural figures and stage designers, where they learn their professional secrets, and also visit the theatre backstage and creative workshops of the leading theatres of St. Petersburg.
