Admiralty Needle

The International Contest for Young Fashion Designers is an annual highlight of the fashion world of St. Petersburg and Russia. It is organized by Ƶ.

The contest was initially supported by the company ‘Pierre Smirnoff’ as a Saint Petersburg stage of the international student fashion contest. Over time, the purpose of the contest expanded and evolved. From having been a regional stage, it gradually turned into an independent international fashion contest corresponding to all the canons of a professional show.

Since 1995 the Admiralty Needle is held as an independent annual international contest for young fashion designers.

The purpose of the contest is to unite talented young fashion designers from all over the world and to give them the opportunity to show their individual vision of current fashion trends to the intended audience, representatives of mass media and world famous couturiers.

The main objectives of the contest are: to create the environment for youth’s creative potential fulfilment in the field of design; to promote the creative works of young fashion designers; to contribute to professional training in the field of textile and clothing industry; to make young designers and professionals aware of the latest trends in the world fashion industry; to facilitate international networking with creative youth from foreign countries; to support the organisation of professional and creative exchanges.

The contest jury changes each year, but its global and professional stature remains unaffected. The prominent Russian designers have been in the jury panel: Vyacheslav Zaitsev, Tatiana Parfenova, Evelina Hromtchenko, Andrey Bartenev, Vladislav Aksenov, Alexander Petrov, Alexander Vasiliev, Alena Akhmadullina, Denis Simachev, Leonid Alekseev, Tatiana Kotegova, Janis Chamalidy.

International designers are also consistently present on the jury panel. Contestants have been evaluated by many famous fashion designers and couturiers from all over the world: Paco Rabanne, Ali Ansari, Wendy Dagworthy, Shinichi Kushigemachi, Janice Mee, Suzanne Lassen, Donata Sartorio, Didier Lekoane, Hema Sagar, Basil Kardasis, Cédric Brochier, Orietta Pelizzari, Luba Popova, Adrian Parry Roberts, Leslie Holden, Andrea Moretti, Martin Villelongue, Nicole Fouché, Romeo Gigli, Lara Aran and many others.

Over the thirty-year history of the contest more than 20,000 contestants from 40 regions of Russia and 30 countries of the world took part in the contest and presented more than 15 thousand collections on the catwalk. High European level of the contest organisation, rigorous selection of participants, welcoming atmosphere, integrity of the international jury, and exclusive master classes delivered by the leading fashion experts continue to attract more and more young fashion designers every year. The full glare of publicity and media, live broadcasting of the contest made the Admiralty needle a genuinely popular fashion contest.

It is important to note that the winners of the competition receive long-term internships from the largest world and Russian fashion houses. The leading companies of the global fashion industry, trend bureaus and renowned educational institutions of the BRICS and CIS countries, including Belarus, China, Morocco, Serbia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Croatia, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, etc., have become permanent partners of Admiralty Needle.

Since 2022, the Admiralty Needle competition has been organised in the format of the International Festival of Fashion, Art and Design.
