Students and teachers of the Institute of Spatial Environment Design ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ represented Russia at the XX International Festival of Arts Crayons Tonk/Kala Parv, which was held in early October in Tonk, India. For several days, the participants worked on their own paintings. The subject matter of the works ranged from realistic landscape to abstract composition.
This year, Russia was represented in a distance format by 11 artists - 2 teachers and 9 students of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. The paintings created specifically for the festival will be exhibited at the international forum "Space and Object in Design - 2026," which will be held by the Institute for Spatial Environment Design of ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ in December at the university "Boiling Point - Promtekhdizayn," as well as in 2027 at the Sovremennik library communication center.
Students of ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ spoke about the works presented at the festival:
Anna Getman:
"At the Crayons festival, I chose an oil technique to create a self-portrait. During these three days of the event, I wanted not so much to portray myself as to look inside myself and see what was happening there. I took my photo on a foggy street as a basis."
Alyona Ryabinina:
"The work was done with oil pastels according to sketches. The landscape of Arkhyz is depicted - one of the memorable landscapes of my trip to Elbrus through Karachay-Cherkessia in 2023. I decided to return to that time through painting, remember and convey the atmosphere of mountainous nature, which I really miss on workdays and school days."
Maria Chistokhina:
"I was very excited to re-enter the Crayons 2026 festival. Within three days, I was very pleased to immerse myself in the process of creating an oil painting on canvas, I lacked painting for a long time! I wanted to bring a little brightness to the autumn days, so the main characters of my work were sunflowers. The sun's colors and free manner of writing helped me feel lightness and creative freedom again, as well as return in memories of last year's trip to India and the bright joyful Crayons festival in Tonka."
Anastasia Bespalova:
"The work is called "Memories of India." This is not a reliable landscape, it is a sublimation from the sensations after a trip to the most unusual and magical place in its own way. A point for observation and contemplation, warm colors and hazy light landscapes."
Anastasia Grishan:
"I have been participating in the festival for 3 years, one of which I was lucky enough to spend right in India. Every time I gladly participate in such a festival, it unloads my head and helps to relax. The picture depicts a ballerina, for me a ballerina means freedom, this picture can be interpreted as "a person gets freedom by overwork."
Associate Professor of the Department of Interior Design and Equipment ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ, member of the St. Petersburg Union of Designers, Honorary Member of the International Academy of Contemporary Arts Evgeny Lobanov:
"The work, created for the 20th anniversary Crayons Art Festival in Tonk, India, continues a series of visual studies of geometric and bionic fractals in their diverse relationship with the images of the architectural avant-garde and the contradictions of modern life."
In addition, Sofya Shamanova, senior lecturer of the Department of Spatial Environment Design at ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ, and student Jennet Khudaiberdieva presented their works.

Reference: ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ is not participating in the festival for the first time. Previously, university teachers and students participated in 2024, and in 2025, university representatives worked in person, directly in the city of Tonk. Then the program included excursions, live communication with participants, joint plein air at the festival site. On the final day, the jury, consisting of famous Indian artists, evaluated the competition works and determined the winners.
