Gala concert of the IV season of the international cultural and humanitarian youth project "Opera & Podium" was held at Ƶ
18 May

The thunderstorm scene from the opera by J. Rossini "The Barber of Seville" sounded as an overture to the Gala concert of the IV season of the international cultural and humanitarian youth project "Opera & Podium," implemented by two universities of the Northern capital - the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design.

The popularity of the project and interest in student work is impressive. The seats for this long-awaited concert ended a few weeks before it began, there was not a single free seat in the hall. This is understandable, because the current creative season was devoted to uplifting comic operas in the genre of "comedy dell'arte," in which the characters make fun of each other, build funny jokes and intrigues.

The opening ceremony of the concert was performed by the rector of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design Alexei Demidov and the head of the theater and concert department and international relations of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Viktor Khaprov. In addition, Fabio Mastrangelo, artistic director of the F. I. Chaliapin Theater, greeted the audience and participants of the Gala Concert in his video address.

Deputy Anton Rudakov made welcoming words and a letter from the Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg A.N. Belsky. Every year more and more participants take part in the project, which is now not limited only to the creation of stage productions and costumes for them. For the third year, students of the Engineering School of Clothing (College) Ƶ have been helping performers - students of the Conservatory - create stage images using makeup. Students of the Institute of Applied Arts of Ƶ this year prepared not only gifts for laureates, mentors and experts - memorable brooches, figurines in the form of a stylized fan with images of costume sketches for opera productions of the IV season, souvenir plates and silk scarves with images of costume sketches, but also designed an exhibition of fantasy masks in the lobby of the concert hall - images of characters in Italian operas.

As for the concert itself, the chosen theatrical genre is one of the most difficult in opera and the participants had to work hard to amuse the audience, make a bright comedy and correctly convey the essence of each character. In his brief speech before the start of the concert, the artistic director of the Opera & Podium project, People's Artist of Russia Yuri Laptev wished the children a successful performance and noted the importance of participating in such projects that help to feel the atmosphere of work on a live performance.

Scenes from the world masterpieces of opera classics were presented by students of the vocal and directing department, accompanied by the symphony orchestra of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory under the direction of the musical director of the Opera & Podium project Miras Nurzhanov.

The first was shown a composition of scenes from Gioacchino Rossiini's opera "The Barber of Seville," written on the plot of the comedy of the same name by Pierre Beaumarchais. Before us, one after another, the heroes of the opera passed: the merry fellow and joker Figaro, the charming Rosina, who performed the famous cavatina, the frightened Dr. Bartollo, the self-confident Don Basilio, whose image was embodied by a student from the People's Republic of China, who amazed the audience with his powerful bass and performance skills. Pretty Bertha, also a student from China who possessed a mezzo-soprano, was agile and artistic. The scene was completed by the duet of Figaro and Rosina, in which young artists revealed their acting and vocal talents. Excellent costumes, an unexpected image of Figaro, created by make-up artists - a barber with a mustache, a bright multimedia picture of Spanish Seville completed the pleasant impressions of the opera composition.

The next scene, shown by students, from the opera "The Wedding of Figaro" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the plot of which, also borrowed from the comedy of the French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais, again demonstrates to the viewer the intrigue of Figaro, this time developing an adventurous plan to deceive Count Almaviva. From the first sounds of the orchestra, the auditorium plunged into the atmosphere of the count's castle. The light penetrating through the crystal inserts of luxurious doors reflected the change in mood of the heroes. Countess Rosina, whose image was created by a talented young singer who perfectly speaks her voice, appeared before the audience capricious, looking for male attention and at the same time ready for risky adventures. Light, flying on stage Suzanne and cute page Cherubino, cheerful Figaro and angry formidable count acted so dynamically on stage, performing numerous tasks of the director, that the audience forgot that this was an opera, not a dramatic performance. And the count's dance with the countess in a difficult vocal trio was an interesting find of the production. The color schemes of the costumes helped the artists find the correct character of their character: the count's aggressiveness was emphasized by a bright purple camisole, the delicate marshmallow tones of Susanna and Cherubino dresses spoke of the purity and youth of the heroes, the countess's burgundy peignoir - of the countess's passion and sensuality. It is surprising that the impressive costume of the count was made not of expensive materials - brocade and velvet, but of a knitted fabric made by students of the Department of Technology and Artistic Design of Knitwear Ƶ.

A fragment of Mozart's opera buffa "Everyone Does This" captivated the audience. Live pictures of the Italian landscape, a light summer breeze, seem to take the audience to Naples. This ensemble scene from the finale of the first act of the opera was distinguished by the coherence and accuracy of the change of mood of the heroes. Harmony was observed in the costumes of the characters, in their color scheme and in the careful elaboration of details. Bright multimedia scenery complemented the overall picture. The virtuoso ending was brilliantly performed by young singers, playing back their characters and acting dynamically on stage. The director had thought out all the details of the production. The original decision in the scene of the resurrection of suitors disguised as Turks aroused laughter and sympathy from the audience. The youth and enthusiasm, beauty and dynamics of the ensemble were rewarded with a standing ovation from the audience.

Gaetano Donizetti's light comedy opera "Love Drink" is a funny story of a gullible young man in love. The simple-minded young peasant Nemorino, the fragile and flirtatious Adina and the dull sergeant Belcore appeared before us in the atmosphere of an Italian village. A wonderful tenor from the People's Republic of China - a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory - won the audience not only with his wonderful voice, but also with artistic talent. Adina sounded light and graceful, Belcore - bright and powerful. Together they made a well-coordinated ensemble. Adina's colorful costume can represent the Opera & Podium project not only on the stage, but also on the podium.

The scene from Sergei Prokofiev's opera "Betrothal in a Monastery" was filled with grotesque and humor, ranging from costumes and a moving picture of multimedia scenery to an incendiary acting performance. Dueña's revealing costume and Mendoza's shiny striped, big fish-like costume left a vivid impression. The thermally rich voices of the performers of the main characters of this scene helped to complete the images, and an interesting staged solution caused a lively response from the audience and shouts of "bravo." The enchanting ending, invented by the director of this passage, became the general beautiful and festive end of this playful and bright concert.

Applause, flowers and a riot of colors on stage - this is the finale of the concert, and ahead of everyone was no less festive than today's concert and no less intriguing action - summing up the results of the IV creative season.
