The Mariinsky Palace awarded young designers-winners of the All-Russian competition "BSK: Urban look". Of the 116 applications, 18 participants made it to the final stage. Students have developed the design of preferential contactless smart cards for socially significant categories: schoolchildren, students, people with disabilities and their accompanying persons.

Alina Biba, a student of the Department of Interior Design and Equipment at St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design, took into account the peculiarities of each medium in her project and tried to reflect the image of St. Petersburg. The main characters of the maps were Hermitage cats. Animals are considered the keepers of the museum and are often associated with the city. It is also a reference to the historical context, when cats died during the blockade, and because of the invasion of rats, people were left without food.

"I preferred my own artistic style, which was formed throughout my career. At first I tried using a neural network, but I didn't like the result. The characters were "inanimate". Then I drew it myself. I didn't want to present the project for a long time, but I decided that it was simply unwise to do a lot of work and give up. It is better to proudly present the ashes of your burned painting. The victory of a personal, slightly ridiculous, but natural drawing attracted the attention of the jury. That's what helped me win the prize."

Each map shows sights such as the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Palace Bridge, the Aurora cruiser, and courtyards. Alina added recognizable symbols to the characters — smelt hats, crumpets with powdered sugar, carriages, naval uniforms, and others.

The competition was held as part of the special project "Design Schools". The organizers are the Youth Parliament at the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg and the Foundation for Support of Innovations and Youth Initiatives with the support of the Committee on Transport of St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg State Institution "Organizer of Transportation", the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Minsk Dairy Plant No. 1 LLC and the Young Design project. The work was evaluated by representatives of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, the Committee on Transport and specialized enterprises.

Alexey Tsivilev, Chairman of the Commission on Transport and Development of Transport Infrastructure of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg:

"This competition is a vivid example of how the initiative of young people can bring tangible benefits to the city. This is an important initiative of the Youth Parliament. Why do we need to change the design? This does not affect the financial exhaust in any way. But we live by emotions, sensations, impressions. Therefore, on the one hand, this is a formality, but on the other, it also shapes the attitude towards the transport system of our city."
