St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design hosted the XI Design Week 2025
26 February

St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design hosted the eleventh Design Week.

The project was initiated by the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ and was first held in the spring of 2016, since then it has turned into a large-scale event, which for the fourth year is held both on the site of the college itself and in the University Boiling Point in the center of the Northern Capital.

This season's events were attended by the cycle committees of web design, spatial environment design and industrial graphics. The speakers were teachers of Ƶ, representatives of design studios, practicing designers, including graduates of the university and the university college-organizer of the Week, successfully working in the profession. In total, more than two hundred students took part in the events.

You can read about each format event of the Design Week 2025 in Ƶ in our material.

Master class on the formation of urban open spaces design agenda under the influence of radical design ideas.

Speaker - Irena Zorina, Associate Professor of the Department of Interior and Equipment Design of Ƶ.

The master class was attended by students-designers of spatial environment of graduate groups. Irena told about modern principles of organization of open spaces, showed on the example of several projects techniques in the organization of parks in Paris from the formation of the general plan to the development of small architectural forms. In parallel, the students worked in ArchiCAD on their own projects of landscaping of open spaces.

Master class on AI in interior design.

Speaker - Lev Moshenkin, a graduate of the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ, co-founder of AM2D design studio.

Lev together with the guests of his master class answered the questions whether neural networks will replace us, what they are, what tasks neural networks can close, and also considered three real cases of using neural networks in practice. Then, in real time, students together with the speaker created a conceptual project based on a 3D Max dummy and made trial visualizations with the help of sketching.

Master class on modeling fractal environment objects in ArchiCAD program.

The speaker was Evgeny Lobanov, Associate Professor of the Department of Interior and Equipment Design of Ƶ.

The master class was devoted to modeling of complex geometric structures for the author's design objects. Fractal geometry assumes self-similarity of forms and, as a consequence, certain algorithms of their construction. Such structures have similar properties at different scales, which makes them promising for application in environmental design, urban planning and landscape architecture. Participants of the master class modeled fractal structures in ArchiCAD program using such tools as “morph”, “3D grid”, “shell”, “complex profile”, as well as assembled self-similar structures from elements modeled using basic tools “wall”, “column”, “beam”, “slab” and saved them as library objects.

Master class on visualization of fractal landscape structures in Lumion program.

Speaker — Sofya Shamanova, assistant of the spatial environment design department of Ƶ.

The master class was devoted to visualization of landscape structures modeled in the master class of Associate Professor Evgeny Lobanov with application of Lumion program. Here were considered in detail textures for landscape and their adjustment, creation of their own library of finishing materials, weather adjustment and animation of rain and snow for visualization of the object in different seasons, as well as special effects to make visualizations more photorealistic.

Master class “Modern Public Space”.

Speakers: Sergey Shvedov and Svetlana Veremeenko, professors of the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ.

Sergey Shvedov told the guests about the principles of organization of modern public space on the example of modern libraries, dwelling on ergonomic requirements to the layout and filling of functional zones. Svetlana told the students about engineering systems of modern public spaces, showed interesting examples of design solutions. In parallel, design students worked in ArchiCAD program, developing author's projects of landscaping of open spaces.

Lecture “Cabinet furniture in interior design”.

Speaker - a graduate of the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ, production manager of Smart Interior.

The lecture about cabinet furniture included a story about its types, materials used for its manufacture, fittings, design features and production stages with the use of photo materials. The guests got acquainted with samples of LDF, MDF in enamel, plastic, oak veneer under varnish, metal profiles. Then the work was done to create a technical specification for the production of a cabinet in the hallway in the program “PRO100” with the use of control measurement of the room, design project, photos of used decors.

Master class on the formation of the principles of planning of open spaces in the Italian garden art of the 16th century under the influence of the ideas of the Italian aristocracy.

Speaker - Irena Zorina, Associate Professor of the Department of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ Ƶ.

Irena told about the development of the principles of planning of open spaces in the Italian garden art of the 16th century, showed on the example of several projects techniques in the organization of garden and park complexes. In parallel, students worked on laptops, developing projects of landscaping of open spaces.

Master class on creating collages using AI.

Speaker - Mahmud Karabagly, a graduate of the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ, designer in the international design and architecture studio Sundukovy Sisters (S+S).

Within this master class the process of creating a 3D collage of a bathroom in Art Nouveau style using Photoshop was analyzed. Participants learned how to work with textures, lighting and details to convey the aesthetics of this sophisticated style. The project was developed for a wealthy young client and a group of investors interested in creating a four-story restaurant. The space had to combine fine gastronomy, premium service and an exclusive atmosphere of high standards. Special attention was paid to the fourth floor, where the elite men's club was located - a closed space with a refined interior, designed for status guests. There was an atmosphere of privacy, elegance and respectability inspired by the historic clubs of Europe. In conclusion, Mahmud spoke about his experience of working in the largest design studios in Russia and around the world.

Lecture “Successful project realization: from the idea to the final touch”.

The speaker was Artem Ohanyan, Art Director of BŪRO Design Studio.

The lecturer told about his approach to designing residential interiors. He has been speaking at KTMU Design Weeks for the fourth consecutive year. 6 KTMU graduates are working or previously worked in Artem's studio.

Advertising Design Hackathon.

14 teams, 36 participants - web design and industrial graphics students - took part in the competitive program. During 3 hours the teams worked on a common task, then each team made a presentation of their project to the jury and the audience. Absolutely everyone remembered the symbol of the competition, designed by the final year web design student Polina Dudkina and personifying the image of a student-designer. Based on the results of the event, it was decided to make the Visual Design Hackathon an annual event.

Master class “Figma from scratch”.

Speaker - Anna Shaternikova, a teacher of the College of Technology, Modeling and Management of Ƶ.

The master class was aimed at first-year students of web design, as well as at all those who want to understand the popular tool for interface design and prototyping. During the class the participants got acquainted with the basics of working in Figma. The master class began with the study of the program interface, basic tools and functions: creating frames, working with text and forms, as well as using autolayouts, components and styles. The participants created the first screen of the news site and gained skills for further independent work in the program.

Lecture “Font from Logo. Logo from font”.

The speaker is one of the leading Russian graphic designers, author of over 1000 trademarks, including Tricolor TV, Vitek, General Satellite, developer of fonts and branding, winner of numerous design competitions Vasily Shishkin.

During the lecture Vasily revealed the possibilities of creating an original corporate font, which logically follows from the logo. Several cases of leading Western and Russian agencies were demonstrated. The presentation dispelled several myths that font is an elitist art, that all fonts have already been created. It turned out that a font, like a trademark or a pattern, can be a carrier of meanings, subtle metaphors, can carry a bright creative idea. The simplest methods of correcting a standard font and creating a new one are shown. In a lively and entertaining manner, the speaker tried to instill in students a taste for font design.
