The Vasileostrovsky District Youth House hosted the New Year's gala concert "A Fairy Tale at the Russian Opera", created as part of the second season of the international cultural and humanitarian interuniversity youth project "Opera & The podium." This is the third full-scale concert of the friendly collaboration between the University of Industrial Technology and Design and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory.
At least 150 students and teachers from both universities participate in the project every year. Ƶ is represented in the project by the Institute of Textiles and Fashion, the Institute of Costume Design, the Institute of Graphic Design and the Engineering School of Clothing (college). The project is organized by the Department of International Projects and Educational programs of Ƶ, because among the participants are not only Russian, but also foreign students, there is even a whole team of students from China.
The painstaking work of students and respected teachers-mentors who prepared costumes and make-up helped the artists, as if by magic, transform into their characters.
Three sisters from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" are on stage. The diverse costumes made by students of the Department of Design and Technology of Sewing Products are striking in their complexity and expressiveness. Make–up artists, students of the Engineering School of Clothing, also tried to enhance the perception of the envious sisters' unkind thoughts. And the appearance of a matchmaker on the stage makes the audience freeze with delight, the character's image is so accurately and expressively executed. The tsar and his entourage follow among the audience, the director's find gives an opportunity to examine the embroidered royal coat and chain mail of the guard up close. No wonder this production was awarded a special prize by the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg and presented in the Rotunda of the Mariinsky Palace.
Anna Tishchenko, a student at the Costume Design Institute, shares her impressions:
"I worked in the Tale of Tsar Saltan team, creating a Guard costume. The work on it was very interesting and took several months. I wanted not only to repeat the image of a warrior from the time of Ancient Russia, but to create a real guardian costume in a new interpretation, without losing the associative connection with the roots. After approving the sketch, it was necessary to find ways to create shapes and decorations: the Guard has very large shoulders, I had to work hard to find the right volume, and the texture of the costume resembles the armor of medieval knights, there are "scales" on the chest and back, which I sewed by hand.
It was interesting to work as a team: we need all the costumes to present a single stylistic picture and harmonize in colors. We discussed some aspects of the costume together with the director, Alexander, who also contributed to the creation of the image. And, of course, my teachers, Svetlana Anatolyevna and Tatiana Nikiforovna, who supervised me throughout the work on the project and suggested the best solutions for various details of the costume.
How important is it to see your work on stage? Immensely. We've already had mini-tours, and I'm always as excited as the first time. I am absolutely in love with what I have created myself and with the whole team. And I'm happy that our work lives on."
A scene from Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera "Iolanthe", in the Opera project, is amazing to the audience. & Podium" it has an oriental interpretation. It feels like this romantic story happened not in France, but in one of the Chinese provinces. The explanation is simple: both the director and the designer are Menue Cao, a graduate student of the Costume Design Department at Ƶ, and the performers of this scene themselves came to study in St. Petersburg from China.
A scene from Sergei Banevich's opera "The Story of Kai and Gerda" turned out to be tearfully touching and truly heartfelt. Designers and make–up artists, students of the St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University School of Engineering, worked on this production, creating soft, cozy and warm clothes for grandmothers and children, not only in the literal sense, but also in the sense of warmth. The Snow Queen costume turned out to be the exact opposite – prickly and cold, it casts silvery rays into the auditorium, creating a chilling atmosphere to match the winter weather. The Snow Queen costume was recognized as the best in the second season of the Opera project. & Podium", and its author Alisa Assadulina received the title of laureate.
Daria Kashina, Vasilisa Peretyagina, Svetlana Ogorodova, Karina Diaghileva, Mariana Gadzhieva, Victoria Gandilian and Varvara Mormysheva, makeup students from the Ƶ, told about their work:
"Working on the image of each performer required not only technical skills, but also a deep understanding of the works that were embodied on stage. We created not just makeup, but real images that helped the artists immerse themselves in their role and convey to the viewer the full depth and versatility of their characters.
It's important to see your work on stage, because that's where our efforts find life and meaning. Every make-up, every glued decoration is our soul invested in the work. When we watched our characters come to life under the bright lights of the stage, we realized that we were not just students, but full-fledged participants in the magic of the theater.
Creating unique images required creativity and teamwork from us. Each of us put all our energy and ideas into this process. It was not only professional growth, but also a real pleasure to see how your work becomes part of a large theatrical action."
"New Year's Oranges", as the scene from Sergei Prokofiev's opera "Love for Three Oranges" is affectionately called by its creators, including students of the Costume Design Department of Ƶ, became the final scene of the gala concert "A Fairy Tale in Russian Opera". This production is an undoubted favorite of the last season of the project – after all, it received four awards from the expert council at the gala concert in May this year: for the best make–up for the make-up team of the Engineering School of Clothing, for the best performance of the opera part, for the best director's work and, finally, for the best production. The performance of the artists delighted the audience this time too. The stunning image of the Cook, the comical Truffaldino and the excellent technical and at the same time creative solution of the device for the appearance of orange princesses right in front of the public undoubtedly deserve attention, applause and delight.
In the second season of the Opera project & There was another scene from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel, but it was not included in this New Year's concert. Nevertheless, the audience had a great opportunity to get acquainted with the costumes from this production, made by students of the Department of Technology and Artistic Design of Knitwear of Ƶ and put on display in the lobby of the Youth House. The opportunity to view and take pictures next to the students' unique author's works aroused great public interest, especially the costumes of the dancers made by Tseveendulam Batzhargal, a student from Mongolia, using the macrame weaving technique.
The concert ended with a standing ovation from the audience and shouts of "bravo" addressed not only to the artists, but to all those who had been working on creating images for a year, who came up with mise-en-scenes and learned the parts. Students of the University of Industrial Technology and Design show the highest professional level, finishing their studies, have practical skills in working in the theater. Participation in such projects opens up new opportunities and horizons for them, and for the residents of the Northern Capital it is a celebration that we are all doing together. The third season is already gaining momentum, we look forward to welcoming the New Year and new creative achievements in the Opera project. & The podium."
The guest of the gala concert was Ksenia Kaisheva, Acting Head of the Department of Foreign Languages in Professional Activities at Ƶ, Director of the Center for International Youth Projects and Initiatives:
"The costumes and design solutions of our students are without exaggeration worthy of the best stages and catwalks in the country. The project has become a real extravaganza, combining music, painting, theater and fashion into a harmonious action. The joint work of students and mentors gave new life to the fairy tale, reviving it on the big stage. Every element, from exquisite outfits to vibrant performances– has become part of a unified symphony that inspires the audience. The Opera Project & The podium has already taken its place on the cultural map of St. Petersburg and is steadily moving towards international recognition.
The Opera Project & Podium" gave us all the feeling of a bright holiday, the pleasure of beautiful music performed professionally. Reading famous operas was very unusual due to the extraordinary, creative, original outfits of the performers. I have never seen such costumes on the catwalks or at the opera. It was a pleasure to hear and see at the same time."
