Today, on September 19, 2024, the opening of the exhibition "10 years of the Department of Monumental Art of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design" took place in the main building of the Ƶ.
The reporting exposition, traditionally designed to present the results of the work of students of one of the leading Russian creative universities over the past academic year, this time is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Department of Monumental Art. Given the growing interest of the state and society in creating works of monumental painting for public, industrial and residential buildings, the experience of showing concrete results of mastering the educational program, including the preparation of diploma projects, is extremely important in the context of the activities of this department in the year of its tenth anniversary.
Diploma projects and works of decorative and applied art in the techniques of artistic enamel, mosaics, stained glass, graffiti, frescoes are shown in the central hall on the ground floor. They reveal the stylistic origins of the work of graduates of the department — from ancient mosaics and medieval stained glass windows to the experiments of masters of the early twentieth century. The space of the third floor is provided for works performed by undergraduate students in the 2023-24 academic year.
The works of graduates of the Department of Monumental Art reflect a variety of areas of creative search — from following a realistic tradition to vivid decorative generalizations, rethinking the experience of the avant-garde of the 1910s and 1920s or using traditional art of the peoples of Africa. Diploma compositions made in various techniques (stained glass, mosaic, enamel, sgraffito) cover a wide range of topics. These are stories related to the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic and the victories of the Russian navy, with the holidays and customs of the Slavic peoples and the colorful world of the circus, with the symbols of various types of art and the history of transport, as well as with the performance of the famous Seventh Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich. Another section of the exhibition combined picturesque and graphic portraits, still lifes, story compositions and plein-air landscapes of undergraduate students. This part of the exhibition also convincingly proves the importance of the School for the professional development of the future muralist.
History.
The Department of Monumental Art of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design was founded 10 years ago by the famous St. Petersburg muralist, Honored Artist of Russia, Professor Vasily Sukhov as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Drawing and Painting. She joined the structure of the Institute of Design and Arts of St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise.
Her appearance was dictated by the relevance of the profession of a muralist nowadays. In modern society, specialists in the field of monumental painting can be in demand as artists of public and private buildings, restorers of monumental objects, painters and graphic artists, specialists in decorative and applied arts. Due to the revival of Orthodoxy, muralists are needed in the field of church painting and decoration of churches.
In 2017, Professor Sukhov was replaced as head by the Honored Artist, sculptor Boris Sergeev, and in 2018, the leadership was taken over by the artist-painter, candidate of art History, Daria Antipina.
The department employs talented artists of different ages, representatives of leading St. Petersburg art schools. Over the years of its existence, the division has been constantly expanding, and enrollment has been increasing. In 2023, new training profiles in easel and church historical painting were opened at the department.
The department systematically holds exhibitions at various venues in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. Since 2019, the annual exhibition-competition "Creative Spring" for professional and young artists has been held at the university. Master classes in monumental painting techniques are regularly held: mosaics, graffiti, stained glass, enamel for different age groups.
Scientific activity is developing. For the seventh year now, the annual international scientific and practical conference "Actual problems of monumental Art" has been taking place, the round table "Monumentalists of Russia" is being held, and collections of works are being published. There is a project "Creative meetings. Conversations about art", where leading masters of the arts of the Northern capital are invited.
The department has modernly equipped, educational and creative workshops for stained glass, mosaics, enamel, graffiti, and art textiles. Field plein-air and copy practices are held annually. Communication with production has been established. Together with the teachers, students carry out serious monumental orders for the decoration of temples. International activities are also developing. So, in 2023, 2024, teachers and students-prize-winners of the international exhibition-competition "Walking across three Seas" took part in plein-air trips to India.
The atmosphere of unity and goodwill remains in the team, there is a moment of communication and exchange of experience, which contributes to cultural enrichment, replenishment of professional knowledge. All teachers are members of creative unions, practicing artists, continuously improving their professional level.
Currently, the department is actively developing, the educational process is being improved. The serious level of teaching that has developed during the existence of the department allows us to hope that worthy, talented, professional artists who are in demand by modern society will come out of the walls of the university.
