19 January

An innovative development by a team of university students from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod will help people with disabilities to put on shoes without using their hands. The device will be useful for people with limited mobility, mental health and fine motor skills, as well as for those who are overweight, in rehabilitation after injuries and surgeries, and have problems with joints. The design of sneakers with a built-in device was developed by Arina Pydyk, a student of the Institute of Graphic Design of Ƶ. The project leader was Anna Filaretova (MAI). Also, the team of "shoobuvator" developers included students of Bauman Moscow State Technical University and Lobachevsky NNGU.

The device includes an electronics unit and a mechanism that can push back and return the tongue of the shoe, untie and tie the laces, as well as loosen and tighten the lacing. It is commanded via a button on the smartphone app. A voice control feature will be added in the future.

Arina Pydyk, a student of Ƶ, told about her work on the design of the product:

- When developing the design, it was important to understand the request of the product's target audience, to focus on both appearance and usability, to take into account the interests of all potential consumers. Such shoes should be not only practical, but also attractive, because in addition to people with limited mobility, they will also be in demand among those who like technological clothing and follow trends in the FashionTech market. In the course of my work, I visited shoe manufacturers, delved into the details, and talked to designers. Sometimes I took a shoe and tried on ideas on it to visualize my idea and to estimate.

The authors of the project note that a similar concept was realized by Nike, which released sneakers with automatic lacing based on the movie "Back to the Future - 2". However, the purchase of such shoes is not available to everyone: the cost of one pair exceeds 50,000 rubles. At the same time, the Russian development will cost about 9,000 rubles for single production, and about 4,500 rubles for mass production.

In spring, the team of students plans to start testing the "shoe maker" on the target audience, after which the students expect to release the first batch for sale.
