Students of Ƶ developed service for communication and studying
14 March

Students of Ƶ campus developed a service for safe communication with each other in a pandemic. The service functionality let students do group homework, launch meetings to discuss various projects, as well as virtually play board games, chat, hold events and choose background music for studying.

“Students living in dormitories of the university are a friendly and cohesive collective. Despite the pandemic, we found a way to spend time together. Guys from other universities have already joined our service. Twice a week we hold events with the mechanics of board games. We play “Mafia”, “Crocodile” or “Broken Phone”. Film evenings are arranged once a week,” comments Anastasia Leushina, the author of the idea, the chairman of the student asset of the dormitory, a student of the Institute of Economics and Social Technologies of Ƶ.

Thanks to the launch of the service, a comfortable online learning environment is being formed. Students create channels both for communication and for working on projects or homework. For example, they include a stream from their device in order to perform a presentation, photoshop tasks or engineering graphics together with classmates. On the discord server, which was taken as a basis, there is also a "Radio" channel, to which a bot is connected, playing relaxing music in the Lo-fi genre. This is the music that students use as a background for their studies. There is also a bot that monitors the order: in case of violation, it issues a warning and can even punish unscrupulous users.

“Development of programming code took a few weeks” tells Vladislav Adykanov, student of Institute of Information Technologies and Automatization in Ƶ. “I wrote the programming code of the bot on Discord platform. It is a server, an information storage which consists of many channels, and the channels themselves are made up of participants. I wrote the bot functions in Python using the library “discord.py” in the online code editor Replit. Now the student activists themselves hold their own events here, it is very convenient.”

The motivation for creating a new platform for students was the desire to help and keep in touch with each other, to organize conditions for comfortable and safe co-education, and for the asset itself to continue its activities in organizing events. The guys plan to arrange an online lecture hall with interesting speakers. The functionality of the service is currently in the process of being finalized. It is planned to introduce a mailing list with information about upcoming events, as well as other opportunities that will relieve the administration and organizers from routine work.
