Synthesis of graphics and AI: what students of the Department of Digital and Additive Technologies of ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ presented at the Dialogue of Cultures forum in the Hermitage
01 October

Teachers and students of the Department of Digital and Additive Technologies of ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ at the International Media Forum "Dialogue of Cultures" presented projects made using artificial intelligence technologies.

Student Alexandra Popova presented a series of six posters dedicated to digital myths. She shifts the heroes and plots of ancient myths to modern scenarios. For example, the god Prometheus, who in ancient times gave people fire, gives the Internet in her myths. Venus is the goddess of beauty locked in the reflection of the phone and does not understand where she is real and where she is changed by filters. In the myth of Sisyphus, who always pushes a stone uphill, he looks like a scroller - a man imprisoned in the shackles of social networks, scrolling through the news feed.

Student Maria Sanina spoke about her work Ex Glacies. The installation presents a sealed capsule, inside which a fragment of Arctic ice is preserved - the last physical evidence of an aggregate state that disappeared as a result of an unsuccessful geoengineering intervention. Bones of ancient animals overgrown with moss stick out through the walls of the capsule. In Maria's work, what should have remained buried in ice came to the surface and continues to live its own life, separate from the capsule.

A team of students consisting of Amina Gilyazova, Nadezhda Ivanova, Violetta Kryuchkova, and Ilyas Farudi presented a series of covers of textbooks they created about the regions of Russia based on children's drawings using artificial intelligence technologies. They collected and analyzed drawings of schoolchildren from St. Petersburg, Yamal and Dagestan, reflecting their ideas about their native land, cultural symbols, nature and traditions. Artificial intelligence has helped interpret and transform images into professional illustrations, preserving children's emotionality, immediacy and unique view of the world around them. The project explores the possibility of using neural networks as a tool to preserve the cultural identity of the regions and create a visual language that is understandable and close to children.

A graduate of the department in the direction of "Applied informatics in design" Savva Yariz created the project "The plant thinks with us" - a prototype of the city of the future, which not only functions, but feels, breathes and communicates with its inhabitants. Sculptures and living plants woven into the urban environment collect environmental, social and biological data from the metropolis - from air quality to pedestrian traffic density. With the help of artificial intelligence, processing occurs. Depending on the parameters obtained, the urban appearance changes color: blue - clean environment, orange - load, etc. Thanks to this, residents understand the state of the environment.

Graduate, now - senior lecturer of the department Maria Slavnikova presented the project "Local Mythologies." He explores how generative artificial intelligence can work with cultural memory, local imagery and visual codes - not to reconstruct tradition literally, but to offer a modern interpretation of urban experience, northern ornamentation, holiday practices, biographical memory, text and digital interfaces. An important aspect of Maria's work is whether the neural network retains recognizable motives, creates new connections and how it forms an image at the intersection of data, author's selection and artistic refinement. Artificial intelligence in the project is not an autonomous author, but a tool for visual research and a participant in the dialogue between local heritage, digital culture and contemporary art. She used Stable Diffusion generative models to create the images, including the DreamShaper XL and SDXL models. Neural network generations became the starting material for further author's work: selection of options, compositional solution, editing, refinement of parts and post-processing.

The senior lecturer of the department Margarita Kolmykova prepared the identity of the Prompt-engineering 2.0 hackathon. The project combines the technology and pop culture aesthetics of the 1990s and 2000s, Y2K style and modern generative design. Familiar cultural codes - from retroelectronics to fantastic characters are transformed into images of "creators of the future." Artificial intelligence in work acts as an interpretation tool. He analyzes given references, combines visual traditions and creates new hybrid forms of visual dialogue between cultures of the past and the future. The project was also attended by students of the Department of Digital and Additive Technologies of ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ: Ilya Burashnikov, Daria Troitskaya, Anastasia Moskvitina, Yulia Cherneikina.

A graduate, now - assistant of the department Taisiya Cherezova presented a project on the connection of man with nature and the search for his own identity through interaction with the outside world. In the center - a person who finds himself in the space of the exhibition "I _ NATURE" and goes through the process of self-observation: his choices, movements and reactions become the basis for creating a personal natural image. The generated portraits combine human appearance with animal images, turning the external resemblance into a metaphor for internal qualities - strength, vulnerability, calmness, alertness or the desire for freedom.
