"Eternal pearls" in silver: a jeweler-technologist from ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ revived images from children's literature
22 September

Anastasia Gusakova, a master student of the Department of Technology for Artistic Processing of Materials and Jewelry of St. Petersburg State Pedagogical Institute, based on the work of children's writer Vladislav Krapivin and his novel "Eternal Pearls," developed a parure - a set of jewelry consisting of a hair clip, a ring, earrings and a pendant. Supervisor - Professor of the Department of Technology of Artistic Processing of Materials and Jewelry ²ÝÁñ¶ÌÊÓƵ Vladislav Zhukov.

"In the 19th century, jewelry headsets - parures - gained popularity. A full parure could include up to 15 elements, such as rings, bracelets, earrings, necklace, tiara, feroniera - head decoration. Since the 2000s, jewelry has taken on a more concise and minimalistic design. Modern headsets are made without bright accents and a lot of details. Most often, parures include a ring, earrings and suspension. They can also add a brooch or bracelet"

The story "Eternal Pearls" is included in the trilogy "On the Night of the Big Tide" by Vladislav Krapivin. The main character, Sergei Vitalievich, finds himself in fairy tales that resemble a dream. He turns into a twelve-year-old boy, finds friends and realizes that he misses his childhood. At the end, the heroes find themselves in an uninhabited world, where they meet a crab and receive from him the same "eternal pearls" as a gift.

"The themes of growing up and the ability to remember childhood are very valuable to me. It is they who are revealed in the story. One of the properties of literary works is the ability to transform them into other types of arts from music to painting. I chose to create jewelry"

Anastasia visualized jewelry in a 3D modeling program. The basis was the image of a crab, which the heroes of the play met at the end of the journey. The hairpin follows his claw, which holds a pearl and rosehip branches with a flower. Asymmetrical earrings depict a stylized flower and rose hips, a chain with a pearl is attached to one of them. The suspension is a combination of images of a rosehip bush and a crab shell: stars and flowers are located on the back, and claws are made like rosehip leaves. The animal also clutches "eternal pearls."

When decorating, the young jeweler-technologist used transparent enamel, which helped to create a minimalistic design and exactly repeat the image of the hero of the work. When creating parts, the author chose the technique of casting on molten models from silver, for the decor of silver parts - the technique of notched enamel.

"The novelty of a design object lies in combining two types of art in one product: literature and design. The technique of investment casting and enameling allows you to create a product with the necessary utilitarian and aesthetic properties. Due to the unique perception of the scenes, the use of motifs of literary works in design can become an interesting practice, a starting point in the production of a line of jewelry based on the literary works of domestic authors"
