Rostov mosaics in the project of a student of Ƶ: from underground passages to fashionable sweatshirts
15 June

In the center of Rostov-on-Don, underground passages have long become not just infrastructure facilities, but real art spaces. Their walls are decorated with large-scale mosaic panels, which have become the hallmark of the city.

These works of art capture the key milestones of history and culture: the heroism of the defenders of the Fatherland, plots from the novel "Quiet Don," the conquest of space and touching scenes from Soviet childhood. Recently, these unique objects have a chance for a second life. In our material, we will tell you about the contribution of Anastasia Ivanova, a student of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design, a Rostovite, to the process of digitizing and preserving Rostov mosaics. But first, a bit of history. The authors of the Rostov "underground gallery" were the cladding masters of Mostootryad No. 10 under the leadership of Yuri Labintsev. Sketches were prepared by the architect Salavat Samokaev, the idea was supported by the head of the detachment Georgy Byllo. The technique of performing Rostov panels is unique: this is a Florentine mosaic, where each piece of tile was cut by hand for 11 years by a team of seven masters. For this painstaking work, they were awarded high state awards - the title of Heroes of Socialist Labor.

Now Rostov mosaics have their own website and even merch. And all thanks to the team of enthusiasts Igor Lutai and the student of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design Anastasia Ivanova, who is studying at the university in the profile "Applied Informatics in Design." Igor photographed mosaics and collected the project site, Anastasia was engaged in the development of merch. They met on the Rostov startup accelerator "Southern IT Park," where they found out that both had a dream to show Rostov creations to the world long before the meeting.

In 2025, enthusiasts give the project the name "Mosaic" and launch a digital online gallery, as well as their own clothing line "Mosaic RND," inspired by Rostov mosaics. Anastasia proposes to transfer the plots of mosaics to clothes, choosing for this the technique of embroidery, which, like mosaics, is built from separate elements and accurately conveys the character of the original panels. Today, the project website contains all the panels with detailed annotations. The team produces modern clothes with author's embroidery, the production of which is located in Bataysk. The authors seek to emphasize the beauty and originality of mosaics. According to the participants, the project is not only a way to preserve cultural heritage, but also to breathe new life into it, making it accessible to a wide audience through modern digital formats and fashion. Now the Rostov mosaic has every chance of becoming a recognizable symbol far beyond the borders of its hometown.

We talked with Anastasia to find out how love for the urban art of our native land grew into a project that conquered the Russian media, the Rostovites themselves and all caring people who appreciate non-standard attractions.

Anastasia, how did you get the idea to create a Rostov clothing brand?

I myself love to travel. From trips you always want to bring something to remember: not just a souvenir or a fridge magnet. It is important for me that it is actively used - in clothes, accessories, everyday life. Rostov has a very rich culture, traditions, Cossacks, and in general an interesting story, so I always wanted to promote it. Once I was returning from another trip and thought "what would I recommend to the guests of Rostov to buy as a keepsake." I immediately thought about one of the main attractions - our mosaics.

What do these mosaics mean to you personally?

Of course, this is a very personal story, because I myself am from Rostov. Residents and visitors of the city like to consider them. I myself loved to study their details on the go, while my mother pulled my hand forward, rushing to the market. Therefore, it was obvious to me that the potential of these works was not fully revealed.

Embroidered mosaic. The solution seems very unconventional. How did this thought come to your mind?

With embroidery, you can simulate the texture of the tiles from which the mosaics are made. This has an idea, a practical meaning, and aesthetics. I wanted to make genuine, beautiful and minimalistically designed clothes that people my age and older could understand. I immediately realized that it would be embroidery on oversized clothes. It is beautiful and durable, convenient for urban residents, has an ideological subtext. I developed the entire design myself, selected a model of T-shirts and sweatshirts with a large color range. I tried to select panels for color, but more often it turned out the other way around. I really like mosaics, so all the action took place around them. It was also important that the product and embroidery harmonize with each other.

How did Rostovites react to the new brand?

When we started, we quickly realized that this idea was very responsive to local residents. Our team received a lot of compliments, orders immediately went. Our things are very fond of giving as a gift to loved ones, friends who have moved to other cities. We quickly gained recognition in the media space as well. After the publication of our story in the Russian newspaper, many other newspapers and major publications picked up the agenda. I feel that our team is on the right track, and the project has great potential.

Is there a favorite panel that is special to you?

The transition to Voroshilovsky and Sadovaya is called a love story by local residents, it is about youth. If you look from left to right, you can see the hospital, kindergarten, school, graduation. Two strollers - a boy and a girl. They are born, grow up, and at graduation he proposes to her.
