New data on the process of joining the Pamir-Alai territory to the possessions of the Russian Empire in the 1890s - the mountain system in southeast Central Asia - were found by scientists of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design in the documents of the Main Artillery Directorate, where a report was revealed on the actions of the horse-mountain battery expeditionary detachment in June-July 1892.
"Pamir-Alai in the XIX century was the arena of the "Big Game" - the geopolitical rivalry between the Russian and British empires, the establishment of the border between the spheres of influence of the two powers was difficult and tense. The issue of joining part of these territories to Russia was relevant, since this issue was of significant military-strategic importance regarding influence in Central Asia. As a result of two military campaigns of 1891-1892, Russia managed to relatively peacefully annex the main territory of the Pamirs to its possessions," comments Rimma Timofeeva, associate professor of the Department of History and Theory of Art at Ƶ.

The purpose of the expedition, as scientists found out, was to study the possibility of hostilities in the Pamirs, "Roshan, Shugnan, Vakhan, Hindu Kush, Sesame... places are extremely mountainous, they will probably have to advance on them only with battle, gradually occupying site after site."

The collection of information and the introduction of clarifications into the map was accompanied by a description of the climate and the nature of the conditions. Despite the fact that the report was compiled by the military, the style of the text resembles, rather, samples of classical Russian prose: "Nine months continues in the Pamirs a harsh polar winter with strong storms; and a short summer is very cold - snowstorms occur in June; and in August, water freezes at night. Cold and strong winds exposed the mountains, and miserable vegetation is found only in some places, as a rarity... This testifies to the highest level of culture possessed by Russian officers and provides additional material for cultural studies.

The text also contains interesting information and valuable materials of a historical, ethnographic, scientific and technical nature related to the analysis and assessment of the possibility of operating mountain artillery and transporting ammunition, which made it possible, among other things, to clarify at the end of the 19th century the requirements for new weapons and their features. It was in the 1890s that work began on the creation of a new generation mountain gun, as well as on the introduction of an elastic carriage as an advanced design, which allows us to expand our understanding of the evolution of domestic science and technology.
