The St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design hosted an intensive educational course "Graphic Design in industry: from font to game interface" for students of the Engineering School of Clothing (college) specializing in advertising graphics. The participants studied modern approaches to visual design in the gaming industry and immersion technologies, evaluated the role of graphics in creating characters, interfaces and atmospheric visual solutions.
Maxim Fedorin, a game designer and creator of Unreal Engine games, was one of the intensive experts. Maxim is a direct participant in full—cycle development projects, from idea to implementation. He invited the students of St. Petersburg State University to study the role of illustration and concept art in creating games: to analyze examples of successful games and the process of creating them, highlight aspects of graphic design, trace the process of preparing for a career in the gaming industry, identify the skills needed for graphic designers, and the principles of portfolio formation.
Under the leadership of Maxim Nikonov, founder and director of Rossviar, a leading 360° video producer, expert in immersive technologies and panoramic photography, projects for major brands in VR and interactive platforms are being implemented. Maxim suggested that students master visual solutions for immersive content. His presentation included a logical approach to answering the key question: "Why can't you do without a graphic designer in VR?"
The expert discussed with the intensive participants interfaces in VR: from flat to spherical (Spatial UI), navigation and visual anchors in 360° video, branding features and creating an atmosphere through graphics, design skills that will be critically important for the VR industry in the coming years, as well as a start for the student: what You need to try your hand at creating graphics for VR.
