Meri Galoyan, a student of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (College), a young restorer, restored the Candlemas of the Lord icon for the Athanasius and Theodosius Cathedral in Cherepovets. The restoration was carried out as part of the student's thesis.
"The plot of the Candlemas icon is based on the text of the Gospel of Luke. On the fortieth day after the birth of Christ, Mary and Joseph brought Him to the Jerusalem temple in order, according to the law of Moses, to dedicate the firstborn to God. Such an icon usually depicts the Mother of God, Joseph, Simeon the God—Bearer with the Christ child and the prophetess Anna, however, only four images are visible on the icon that was received for restoration - the image of Joseph is missing. The icon is made in the academic style. An important role is played by the realism of painting, the accuracy of drawing, the transfer of texture of materials, chiaroscuro harmony," says Mary.
At the first stage of the work, a student of Ƶ reinforced the paint layer and the soil in the places of departure and treated the holes from the grinder beetle with a special solution. After that, the restorer began conservation: using a toothbrush, gauze, scalpel and soap, the back was cleaned of dirt and paint stains, and sawdust and a 15% aqueous solution of rabbit glue were used to make up for the loss of wood, and then sanded.
The next step was for the student to repair the loose parts of the wooden base, gluing the joints, connecting and securing the parts with clamps. The areas of wood loss were repaired using a 15% aqueous solution of mezdra glue and sawdust. The loss of soil was compensated by applying the first layer of soil by the method of facing, the next layers were applied with a scalpel. After drying, the soil was sanded.
The student recreated the icon drawing based on the canonical images of the Candlemas of the Lord icons. Mary used oil paints, thin synthetic brushes and a thinner based on dammar varnish and pinene. At the last stage of the work, the icon was covered with a layer of protective varnish.
The thesis supervisor is Gleb Shinkarev, a teacher at ISHO Ƶ, a restorer.
