A student of Ƶ designed a set of jewelry based on the Penrose mosaic

Polina Kharitonova, a student of the Department of Technology of Artistic Processing of Materials and Jewelry at St. Petersburg State University, designed a set of jewelry inspired by the Penrose mosaic, named after the English physicist and mathematician Roger Penrose.

The set consists of a necklace, earrings and rings made of diamonds, yellow and white gold, blue and white enamel.

"I wanted to implement the ideas of Roger Penrose, who laid the foundation for the analysis of ornamental graphics through the synergy of natural science and humanities disciplines for a more complete understanding of the evolution of ornament and its symbolic and symbolic meaning. Thanks to this, I wanted to create unique jewelry that has no analogues on the market. To do this, I studied the properties of architectonic trends in jewelry art when designing based on the morphology and coloristics of girich ornaments," comments Polina Kharitonova, a student at St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design.

The shape of the necklace is formed using non—periodic construction, namely unequal mosaics - the "star boat" and the Mikula—Roth mosaic. The alignment rules for a diamond-shaped mosaic are reduced to a certain restriction on the angles allowed at each vertex, which leads to a binary mosaic.

The earrings continue the concept of the necklace, reflecting the essence of the construction of the details of the dominant module — "snake" and "dart". The upper part is represented in the form of a snake's head with a stone insert shaped like a "snake", the lower part refers to a "dart" due to the elongated shape of the arrow. The jewelry has fragments of symmetry and asymmetry.

The ring completes the trilogy of products. It represents absolute symmetry based on a hexagonal grid of intersecting circles. The design of the ring meets all the principles of Islamic geometry.

The thesis supervisor is Vladislav Zhukov, Professor of the Department of Technology of Artistic Processing of Materials and Jewelry at St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design.
