05 June

The results of the All-Russian competition for young artists, researchers and designers "BIA_ART", dedicated to the creative legacy of the Soviet and Russian graphic artist Olga Biantovskaya (1941-2024), have become known. The participants were invited to rethink her work: graphic series, theatrical posters and book illustrations in various categories.

Zanik Hovsepyan, a student of the Costume Design Department at Ƶ, presented the Biant clothing collection at the competition. The author won a special prize from the Bureau of Beautiful Affairs art space as a result of winning the audience vote in the Fashion nomination.

"When creating this collection, I was inspired by the works of Olga Biantovskaya. Using her work in her sketches, she added a twist to evening and outerwear."

Karina Mamchur, a student of the Department of Technology and Artistic Design of Knitwear at Ƶ, and Anastasia Polozova, an associate professor at the Department of Painting and Drawing at Ƶ, presented the article "Art that Speaks: how a graphic artist creates the visual language of an epoch" in the Texts category.

The article is devoted to the work of Olga Biantovskaya, an outstanding Leningrad artist whose works became a striking phenomenon in Soviet art during the "thaw" period. The text reveals the main features of the artist's unique style, combining the traditions of the Leningrad academic school and innovative techniques of the 1960s. Special attention is paid to the analysis of Biantovskaya's theater posters, which revealed the characteristic features of her creative handwriting: conciseness of forms, symbolism of images, bold work with color and typography. The authors trace how Biantovskaya managed to maintain her artistic identity in the face of ideological constraints, avoiding both officialdom and the underground. The study shows the relevance of Biantovskaya's creative legacy to modern culture, emphasizing her importance as a "quiet innovator" whose work still continues to inspire artists.

Other works submitted in this nomination did not pass the strict pre-selection screen, so the authors became holders of special jury diplomas, as the article became the only work in the nomination.
