How are large projects created, and how do creative ideas and the capabilities of different platforms allow for a significant increase in a book's readership? Experts discussed these topics during the first round of the forum at Ƶ. Participants presented several notable projects created by traditional publishers in collaboration with companies such as Vimbo, Litres, and Yandex Books.

Today, the North-West of Russia is represented by a single educational institution in the field of training specialists for the media industry and publishing: the University of Industrial Technologies and Design, through its structural subdivision, the Higher School of Printing and Media Technologies. It covers the entire spectrum of professions in demand in the book industry: from editors and publishers to printers and graphic designers.
The history of the Higher School of Printing and Media Technologies spans almost eight decades of steady development in step with the industry. The educational process is a blend of training areas, from traditional to digital, to cover all stages of book production and distribution in the modern market.
Alexey Demidov, Chairman of the Council of Rectors of Universities in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region and Rector of Ƶ, noted that the term ‘hybrid technologies’ has entered our lives relatively recently, but they are developing and integrating into our lives very rapidly.

‘As a result, we can say with confidence today that a book is more than just text on paper,’ said Alexei Demidov. He added that this may be unusual for the older generation, ’because for them, time spent with a book means turning pages in silence.’ Yes, paper books are still around, but alongside them, we can already see large and interesting projects related to literature.

Daria Blagova's book ‘Pushing Off from the Pause: 7 Short Stories About Love, Help, and Hope’ was also released simultaneously in three formats: paperback, audiobook, and e-book. This large-scale project brought together the efforts of Litres and the Gift of Life Foundation, with all proceeds going to a fund that helps children with cancer. This project is a testament to the important social mission that the book business fulfils.
Mikhail Ivanov, co-owner and CEO of Podpisnye Izdaniya, continued the theme of charity, explaining how the bookstore collects and donates tens of millions of roubles to help those in need. Mikhail Ivanov also presented major projects, including a series of translated editions created in collaboration with Yandex Books.

What will the future of books be in the era of hybrid technologies? Is the media industry killing or developing book reading? Do new technologies pose a threat to writers, publishers, and readers, or, on the contrary, do they open up new opportunities? These questions were hotly debated by experts in the second and third rounds. And no matter how heated the debate between the participants, they were unanimous on one thing: large-scale book projects that combine text, music, acting and digital technologies not only drive the book industry forward, but also greatly increase the significance of books. The second part of the forum will be a digital battle between graphic design students. The experiment, designed to determine whether artificial intelligence can work with typography, was as follows: first, the team was asked to create a poster or billboard on the theme of ‘The Cultural Code of City S.’ using only typography and fonts by Vladimir Efimov, the author of the ‘Petersburg’ font. In other words, the young specialists first created typographic versions of the poster without using AI and neural networks in order to demonstrate the font basis of the city's identity. In the second stage, they had to rework the result using AI and neural network technologies, primarily using typography. The degree of AI application and author's refinement in the final version was at the discretion of the team members.

A book is more than just content. Thanks to the artistry of publishers, editors, printers, producers, screenwriters, directors, and actors, content is poured into many vessels. As a result, entire book universes are created — series, games, audiobooks, films, podcasts, theatre productions — drawing more and more readers into the world of reading.
