The Russian competition for young fashion designers, ‘Breath of Spring,’ took place at Ƶ
23 May

For the 32nd time, talented creative young people demonstrated their unconventional creative solutions and professional skills at the Russian competition for young fashion designers and clothing designers ‘Breath of Spring’ at the Engineering School of Clothing at Ƶ. The university college's catwalk hosted a gala show of this year's best collections and an awards ceremony for the winners. In total, more than 150 participants from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tver, Vologda, Veliky Novgorod, Gavrilov-Yam (Yaroslavl Region), Kemerovo, and Tajikistan presented their work to the jury.

This year's theme was ‘To All Four Corners,’ symbolising freedom of choice, diversity of styles, and cultural intersections. Fashion knows no boundaries: it can transcend space and time, influence our perceptions, and enrich our everyday lives. Designers were asked to look at familiar things from a new angle and present models and collections that can be adapted and transformed — every twist and every detail should reveal new meaning and context.

For the ‘By Compass’ nomination, designers developed single models that demonstrate uniqueness and individuality through the prism of contemporary trends in clothing design, reflecting the designers' personal vision of their path. In addition, according to the terms of the nomination, the model must demonstrate interesting and innovative transformations, allowing viewers to see how the same element of clothing can change its shape, function or style. This can be achieved through original design solutions, additions and accessories.

The winner of the nomination was Ekaterina Gavrilenko (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ) with her model ‘Cut of Power’. The jury awarded second place to Maria Vagacheva (St. Petersburg State University of Technology and Design, Institute of Costume Design) for her design ‘Gde podpis rodiтелей’ (Where are the parents' signatures?). Third place went to Polina Polyakova (Tver Industrial and Economic College) for her design “Tsvet vnutri” (Colour inside).

For the ‘Wind Rose’ nomination, designers developed mini-collections. This nomination is intended for first- and second-year students and offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate their creative potential by exploring the richness of cultural traditions and contemporary trends. The inspiration for this nomination was a symbolic landmark — the wind rose, which unites the four cardinal points and serves as a reference point for navigation.

Participants were tasked with creating a mini-collection consisting of three models that harmoniously combine elements of traditional styles from different eras and peoples with current fashion trends. Second place in the nomination went to Sofia Tsybatova (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ) with her mini-collection ‘Déjà Vu.’ Third place went to Yulia Tsyganova (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ) with her mini-collection ‘Cultural Heritage.’

For the Pret-a-porter ‘My Azimuth’ nomination, participants were asked to create a collection consisting of at least five models, in which each item would be not only stylish but also functional. Azimuth is not only a direction, but also a symbol of striving for something new, a desire to explore uncharted territories of fashion. The collection could be inspired by historical styles, the works of famous fashion houses, or the designer's personal cultural code.

The winners of the nomination were the team of designers Fotima Shoeva and Zukhra Shoeva (Tajik State Institute of Fine Arts and Design) with the collection ‘Nigini Shahname’, as well as Alina Zabolotskaya (Engineering School of Clothing, St. Petersburg State University of Technology and Design) with the collection ‘KOI’. In second place was the team of designers Ekaterina Shotovskaya, Anastasia Bobrova and Sofia Gorelova (St. Petersburg Fashion College) with their collection ‘Niti Kloto’. Third place went to Vasilisa Pobezymova (Engineering School of Clothing, St. Petersburg State University of Technology and Design) with her collection ‘EXCUBITRIX’.

In the Beyond the Horizon category, designers presented their show collections of five or more models, experimenting with form, colour and style. This category is for extraordinary solutions that respond to contemporary challenges and anticipate changes in the fashion world. The concept of ‘Beyond the Horizon’ implies the exploration of new aesthetics, technologies and materials. Participants were asked to pay special attention to accessories and their uniqueness: these could be futuristic jewellery, unusual headwear or footwear.

The winners of the nomination were the team of Ekaterina Gavrilenko and Anastasia Skomorokhova (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ) with their collection ‘Plyushkin Syndrome.’ Second place went to Anastasia Efimova (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ) with her collection ‘Enchanted by the Forest.’ Third place was awarded to Oleg Prokop's collection ‘135-155° 35-42°’ (Engineering School of Clothing, Ƶ).
