18 April

The three-day professional skills competition “Restorer of the Year 2025” among students of specialized educational institutions ended in the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Center. The contest was held as part of the business program of the International Exhibition of Construction, Finishing Materials and Engineering Equipment InterStroyExpo. The winner of the first place and the title of “Restorer of the Year” in the nomination “Restoration of easel tempera painting” was Ekaterina Gutsalyuk, a student of the Engineering School of Apparel (College) of Ƶ.

As part of the competition assignment, the student performed a description of the icon's preservation by visual observations and conducted an ultraviolet study. She identified late toning, wax and shellac. Catherine then began the conservation process. She removed contaminants in the areas of loss and prepared the surface for applying the restoration primer. The next stage was the board reinforcement and removal of late layers. In the end, the student performed conditional toning in the “Pointel” technique and coating the icon with a protective layer of restoration varnish, and she was given a competition report.”

says Ekaterina's mentor, a teacher of the School of Engineering and Clothing of Ƶ, restorer Gleb Shinkarev

Ekaterina's work included several modules: description of the monument's preservation based on visual observations, drawing up a plan of restoration measures, preparation of the loss surface and execution of board reinforcement of the icon, removal of wax efflorescence from the surface, and in the end - replenishment of the loss of the author's painting.

The young restorer in conditions of limited time was able to determine the number of losses of the base, types of destruction of pavoloka, levkas and paint layer, to conduct a study of the lacquer coating in UV rays, to build a scheme-cartogram, to eliminate soot and grime, to degrease and clean the surface of the ground, to perform board reinforcement.

Ekaterina's restoration work was also accompanied by conducting tests for water-solubility of the areas with records, selecting a solvent, and developing the method of restoration of the icon.

The competition involves the participant's performance of tinting with watercolor paints in the “pointel” technique, and when filling in the losses of painting, the contestant is guided by the requirements of museum restoration, the tinting should not be lighter by a tone than the author's painting, should not go on the author's layer and should not interfere with the holistic perception of the icon.

Ekaterina beat participants from the N.K. Roerich St. Petersburg Art School, the Academy of Restoration and Design, and the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. The competition partners were the leading restoration companies of the city. The contestants were evaluated by leading Russian restorers and representatives of restoration companies.

The competition was organized by the Committee for State Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments and the Union of Restorers of St. Petersburg.
