An exhibition of the University of Industrial Technology and Design's sports glory has opened at the State Sports Museum in St. Petersburg. The exposition introduces the guests to the long-term history of sports development at Ƶ. The showcases feature the most significant awards that students and university staff have won at city, national and international competitions. During the grand opening of the exhibition, a cooperation agreement was signed between the university and the museum.
Visitors of the exhibition can get acquainted with the main milestones in the history of the sports glory of the University of Industrial Technology and Design from its foundation in 1930, when the university was still called the Leningrad Textile Institute, to the present day. The museum exhibits cups, medals and other significant awards that were earned by university athletes in basketball, football, cheerleading, boxing, volleyball and other sports. The stands feature the most striking shots of sports competitions and portraits of the university's best athletes.
Among the most valuable exhibits are the belt of Vsevolod Shumkov, the champion of Russia in the weight class up to 60 kg, a master of sports of international class, a student of St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University, as well as the belt of Alexey Osokin, a Russian boxer and a graduate of the university. An important place in the exhibition is occupied by a drum, which has become a symbol of support for the Russian national boxing team during the 2023 World Cup in Tashkent. The drum bears the signatures of famous boxers: Gabil Mammadov, Alexey Dronov, Muslim Gadzhimagomedov and others. Among them was Vsevolod Shumkov, who took the bronze medal of the aforementioned tournament.
At the opening of the exhibition, representatives of the University of Industrial Technology and Design transferred one of the most important medals in the modern history of the university to the permanent exhibition of the museum, which houses more than 500 exhibits, including medals and cups of outstanding athletes of the city – the gold medal of the women's basketball team of St. Petersburg State University of Higher Education.
The solemn event was attended by Igor Sologub, Adviser to the Chairman of the Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, Eduard Latypov, Manager of the St. Petersburg State Sports Museum, Viktor Romanov, President of the Ƶ and bronze medalist of the 1960 Olympic Games, Tatiana Arshavina, mother of Andrey Arshavin, ex-captain of the Russian national football team and graduate of the Ƶ, and Vice-rector for Educational Activities and Student Body Ƶ Evgeny Ananichev, Sports Director of the St. Petersburg Basketball Federation Nikolai Kuzmin, Andrey Gusletsov, Executive Director of the Nevsky Basketball League; Alexey Ivanov, Deputy Head of the St. Petersburg Boxing Sports Federation; Anton Bogatsky, General Director of the Overtime League; Alexey Osokin, Russian professional boxing champion and graduate of the Ƶ; Gennady Shchetinin, Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Education at St. Petersburg State University and head coach of the university's women's basketball teams; Alexander Osipov, head of the St. Petersburg Student Hockey League; Mikhail Pilipenko, Executive Director of RAQRS, and Alexander Sabor, Master of Sports of international class in boxing.
