Ƶ foreign language teachers participated in the advanced training program "Teaching adults a foreign language in various contexts"
14 February

From January 29 to January 31, 2025, a professional development program was held at the Boiling Point – Promtech Design, which unites teachers of foreign languages from all departments of the university. The participants not only got acquainted with current teaching methods, but also built new models of professional cooperation.

The program was organized by the Department of Foreign Languages in Professional Activity and the Institute of Additional Professional Education of St. Petersburg State University of Applied Sciences. The program was attended by teachers and heads of foreign language departments at the PROMTECHDESIGN educational complex, as well as colleagues from the Clothing Engineering School and the College of Technology, Modeling and Management.

The leading expert of the program was Alexey Valentinovich Bakulev— PhD in Philology, Associate Professor at the HSE School of Foreign Languages, academic director of the educational program "Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication".

People with different experiences, different philosophies of teaching foreign languages, and different views gathered, but with a common goal – to help students grow and learn. This is what makes it unique: unity in a variety of approaches. We learn by teaching others, and it is these programs that help us make education better.

The program included lectures, interactive discussions, classroom design, analysis of educational materials, and teamwork in groups. The result was demonstrations of lesson fragments developed by teachers taking into account new methodological concepts.

Without a culture of teamwork, it is impossible to move forward. To ensure the competitiveness of our graduates, we must work together, joining forces, sharing experiences, and going beyond the usual. This program has become a platform for co-creation and this is just the beginning. We will meet again in May to study artificial intelligence-based tools.

Such events allow us to gather, discuss important issues, exchange opinions and see how teaching methods are being transformed. After all, language is a living organism that is constantly changing. Even a technical foreign language requires new approaches. We must find solutions that will help students not only write scientific articles, but also do it at the level of international standards.

The experience is excellent! Of course, the environment plays a huge role — the "Boiling Point" space corresponds to the highest level. But the most important thing is the opportunity not only to develop professional skills, but also to build personal and communicative competencies, learn to interact, and feel colleagues from other departments. We have been missing this opportunity for a long time – to feel like a part of a unified educational community.

Such programs are a chance not only to learn new techniques, but also to interact with colleagues. This is a great opportunity to discuss important aspects of student communication with experienced professionals. This is an invaluable experience for young teachers.

The next stage of joint work will take place in May 2025 and will be devoted to the use of artificial intelligence in teaching foreign languages.

However, the cooperation of the departments of foreign languages does not end there. They have developed a new professional retraining program . The Institute of Additional Professional Education invites full-time graduate students to complete a professional retraining program and receive additional qualifications such as "A specialist with knowledge of a foreign language to work in the professional field".
