18 October

Students of the Higher School of Printing and Media Technologies of Ƶ returned from another book trip of future publishers and editors. This time the students visited Vologda.

Vologda Region is the soul of the Russian North, a land rich in talents, the birthplace of many outstanding representatives of literature and art: Batyushkova, Shalamova, Belova, Rubtsova, Gavrilina. First of all, the students went to the Vologda Regional Universal Scientific Library named after I. V. Babushkin (VOUNB), founded back in 1919, where they received the most comprehensive information about the retrospective and current publishing repertoire of the region.

— Coincidentally, we found ourselves in Vologda in the midst of the Vologda Book Week, which culminated in the summing up of the annual Book of the Year competition. The competition has been held for 13 years, and it is VOUNB who is its permanent organizer and coordinator. We were lucky enough to meet with Lyubov Solodukhina, the head of the group for work with a mandatory copy, which performs the functions of the regional book chamber, who told us about the modern publishing process of the region and the peculiarities of its repertoire.

Associate Professor of the Department of Book Publishing and Book Trade Olga Starkovskaya

The students were greatly interested in the story of Irina Isakovskaya, head of the rare books sector, about the collection of ancient and modern publications of the foundation. It has about 100 thousand items of storage, including not only old handwritten and printed books, but also postcards, bookplates, lithographs, autographs, reprints and facsimiles, miniature and large-format publications, as well as thematic collections dedicated, for example, to the history of libraries and book business in the region, writers of Vologda region. Among the most valuable books is the paleotype "Lexicon of Greek—Latin" by J. P. Albens, printed in Basel in 1532, the manuscript "The Alphabet of the Slovenian language", copied by an unknown master from Veliky Ustyug at the end of the XVII century, the old-printed "Oktoikh" of 1594 and "Triode tsvetnaya" of 1685. There are also two books in the library — "Shestodnev" and "Service Book" — with inscriptions by E. F. Lopukhina. There is also a place in the collections of the foundation for books by the St. Petersburg publishing house Vita Nova.

Despite its venerable age, the library looks modern: spacious bright halls, cozy reading areas, showcases and shelves with permanent historical and temporary thematic exhibitions of documents and publications, new equipment and appliances. This is a real cultural and educational center of the capital of the region, which holds a large number of events not only for its readers, but also for all professionals of the book industry, science, art, ethnography and local history.

The acquaintance with the book business of the region continued at the publishing house "Antiquities of the North", where students met with director Marina Vasilyeva and editor Nadezhda Sholomova.

Every year, "Antiquities of the North" produces, on average, about 20 editions with a total circulation of about 13 thousand copies. The portfolio is formed by publications of budget cultural enterprises, mainly museums, corporate publications of large companies and individual authors. About half of the projects are carried out with the help of grants from various foundations. Many books were published thanks to the support of the Vologda Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. The basis of the publishing house's repertoire are scientific and popular scientific publications: monographs, collections of articles, albums, atlases, museum catalogs, guidebooks.

Vologda meetings turned out to be not only informative, but also truly friendly, warm, and sincere. The students walked around the snow-covered city a lot, and then warmed up in cozy cafes. We visited both the "Lace Museum" and the "Vologda Oil House". Vologda is a wonderful place for both a scribe and a simple tourist, everyone will find something interesting and inspiring here.
