Ƶ architects curated design projects for renovation of libraries in St. Petersburg and the region
09 July

The First Design Hackathon of the North-West has solemnly ended in St. Petersburg. About a hundred participants - interior, industrial, object and environment designers, architects and 3D-visualizers - gathered at the Design District DAA site. They presented nearly two dozen design projects for Northwest libraries that they had been developing for two weeks. The hackathon was held with grant support from the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives and in partnership with Technopark St. Petersburg, the Vnukov Central Library and the Design District DAA Design Center. The teams were supervised by designer-architects from St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design.

During 10 days 20 teams worked on interior design projects for 10 libraries. The plan of work on the project included acquaintance of teams with each other, acquaintance with the customer, acquaintance with the object, and the geography of the objects is quite wide - from Sestroretsk to Opochka, development of the concept and planning solution. The final presentations of the projects took place at the Design District DAA. Irena Zorina, Associate Professor of the Department of Interior and Equipment Design of Ƶ, member of the St. Petersburg Union of Designers, member of the International Creative Union of Artists (IFA), supervised the development of the Grand Prix winner project, namely the S.V. Mikhalkova Library. S.V. Mikhalkov Library in Sestroretsk. The concept is that like a tree, every child can become stronger, increase their knowledge and skills. The roots of the tree also symbolize stability and integrity. Under the improvised tree there is a house for kids - a symbol of safety. The crown of the trees protects and defends the house, as in normal life the older ones protect the younger ones. These two symbols create a warm and cozy atmosphere in the space.

Helping to create a welcoming and friendly environment that promotes learning, reading and imagination in children is our goal.

As a technical task, the team curated by Irena Zorina had to think over the replacement of flooring, doors, painting of walls, replacement of furniture: shelves, tables, and a chair. Due to the urgent need for global renovation, as well as the fact that the library is a pole of attraction for children and young people, the wishes for style were also formulated: modern classic, Mediterranean, modern, Scandinavian, japandi, minimalism.

Sergey Shvedov, a teacher of spatial environment design at Ƶ, the main expert of the Professionals Championship in the Interior Design competence, was the supervisor of the project, which took the second place. With the team he developed a project for the Kirov Islands Library. The concept of a solution for the library starts with the realization of its already existing function. The authors of the project recognized the need for aesthetic renovation and some planning problems, while emphasizing what is already successfully functioning in the space. The main principles of the solution can be divided into three parts: the theme of family, island and accessibility.

The library is already a gathering place for people of different ages, mainly children accompanied by their parents or grandparents. Here children can read with their parents, and grandmothers and grandchildren can participate in drawing workshops. The team curated by Sergey Shvedov developed this idea by providing more comfortable conditions for interaction between people of different ages. For this purpose they added soft pouffes for children, created a podium in the children's room for games and arranged comfortable seating for parents in the reading zone. Colorful flooring was used to zone the space, but without level changes to ensure comfort for older visitors.

The island theme is evident not only in the name of the islands library, but also in its new design. The library's latest rebranding references the island theme even more strongly - the three triangles in the logo stand for Krestovsky, Petrogradsky Island and Yelagin Island. Islands are also associated with children's games, treasures and mysteries.

We have created a whole world for children - in each room we have a floor map, following which you can find different islands, highlighted by color - each room uses different colors from the logo. We also emphasize the island theme with our architectural and stylistic solutions - flowing lines appear in the design, reminiscent of the island's coastline. These lines also allow for more comfortable movement between rooms.

At the end of the hackathon, the teams defended their projects in front of customers - libraries of St. Petersburg, Leningrad and Pskov regions - and an expert committee, which included experienced designers - teachers of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design, as well as owners of brands and design studios. Customers and jury evaluated the works according to several criteria: originality and integrity of the concept, elaboration of the measurement plan, planning solution, sketches and visualization, as well as the quality and conciseness of the presentation and the availability of additional materials - estimates, kitting.
