Ƶ student developed a digital collection dedicated to the protection of coral reefs
24 June

Polina Gorelova, a student of the Master's program in Fashion Tech at the Department of Digital and Additive Technologies of Ƶ, presented her diploma project, within the framework of which she developed a digital and digital evening collection of clothing and accessories "FROTH ON THE DAYDREAM", dedicated to the protection of coral reefs. The master's profile was opened by the University of Industrial Technologies and Design as part of the implementation of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science's Priority 2030 program.

The collection is designed by the author to draw attention to the protection of marine ecology and especially to coral reefs, which are under continuous stress due to a multitude of global problems: deterioration of water quality, overfishing, pollution and unsustainable development of coastal areas. The concept of the collection is based on an invented marine character, Serenity, a mermaid who lives on a coral reef. She dwells in the depths of the sea, protecting her home. But Serenity's life cannot be called completely carefree, as the coral reef is dying. An important message of the collection is to maintain a level of conscious care for the reef ecosystem.

A special feature of the collection is the use of 3D printing in the creation of corset tops and jewelry, as well as the use of metallic textures on both the 3D doubles and the printed pieces. The corsets after printing were treated with a special lacquer with metal imitation and electroplating.

Printed jewelry was created in two ways. The oversized pieces, such as bracelets and the main element of the bodhichen (long chain on the body), were plated with precious metals using electroplating. Molds (rubber molds similar to molds for baking confectionery) were removed from small-sized items, and wax replicas were created from them, which are further cast in metal.

When printing corsets, Polina used PLA (Polylactic Acid) plastic. It is created from a thermoplastic polymer that is made from renewable resources, such as recycled corn starch or sugar cane.

- The digital imagery and accessories are designed with references to the image of the mermaid and the rich life of coral reefs. The spontaneous interweaving of its inhabitants gives a wide scope for imagination and experimentation in mixing different shapes and textures, while remaining completely in harmony with natural life. I want to take my collection from the prototype stage to the final version. I also plan to experiment with printing corsets: to try to apply two different polymers of rigid and flexible plastics in printing, - says the author.

In total, the collection includes 19 pieces, 14 of which were prototyped by 3D printing. The first digital image - mother-of-pearl oyster - consists of a digital dress-flapper with fan sleeves, accessories and jewelry made of silver-coated photopolymer with pearls. The second image - reef mermaid - includes a corset made of flexible plastic, a long skirt, jewelry made of silver-coated photopolymer: congo earrings with starfish, choker with coral pattern and shell pendant, biomorphic cuff bracelet with coral pattern, ring with starfish. The third look - abalone - is a flexible plastic corset accessory, leggings, pussy earrings and a pair of straight cuff bracelets with a horn coral pattern, and a starfish ring. The fourth image - sea sheep - consists of a bodysuit with an octopus-shaped bodysuit and a pendant with a sea shell, earrings and a cuff bracelet in the form of a stylized tentacle. The fifth image - ocean mimicry - includes a corset top, a voluminous skirt in the form of a jellyfish, asymmetrical earrings with stylized shells, and a ring with a seashell.
