Students of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design presented their collection on the catwalk of the atrium of the Commandant's House on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress. The show was held within the framework of the Russian Concept Fashion Day. The landmark event in support of domestic fashion manufacturers and young designers is held for the second year in a row on the initiative of the federal clothing retailer Concept Group. This time it was included in the program of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The events of the Russian Fashion Day included business sessions in the creative space "Raskroi", where industry experts answered the questions of aspiring fashion designers. And its culmination was an evening fashion show, where guests saw the current collections of Concept Club, Acoola, Raskroi brands, as well as capsules created in co-authorship with young designers, including students of Ƶ Taisiya Varlamova and Polina Zhuravleva.
During the preparation for the show, Taisia acted as assistant creative designer of the Raskroi space and supervised the student group working on their own collection.
"I became part of the project thanks to my internship in the Raskroi design space. In the spring, I was approached to put together a team of students to create a collection of young designers. As the curator of the project, I set the general direction of the collection and followed the whole process of its creation, starting with the search for project participants and ending with the production of the pieces. Together with the team, I developed images, selected materials, and held fitting sessions before sending the final patterns for sewing. It was very important for me that all the young designers of the project were free and open in their creative ideas and were not shy to offer unusual solutions," says Taisia Varlamova.
Together with Taisia, Polina Zhuravleva, another student of Ƶ, developed product designs, chose materials, participated in fitting, and helped in creating technical sketches.
The result of their work was a collection called "Outlines". The fashion designers chose the name for a reason - it refers to the very creators of the collection, who are still making their first steps in design. "We don't know yet where our creative impulse will lead us and what we will meet on this path, now we only see its approximate direction, like the outlines of a picture", - adds Taisia.
The source of inspiration for the collection was modern youth - brave, open-minded and ready to see beauty even in imperfections. The concept of the images is based on an attempt to show the beauty in what is usually considered imperfections in design: raw edges with protruding threads, materials with a boiling effect, facing back seams, changed proportions of cut details, rearrangement of details, asymmetry. Many pieces of the collection are strongly elongated, so that during wear the clothes are washed and thus transformed into something new. For their prints, the designers used human figures. Their goal was to create an image in which every young man can find his reflection. The main materials were cotton, denim and knitwear. The color scheme of the collection is predominantly dark, cold, using complex shades.
"The collection includes two of my models. Among the most interesting garments I created are a women's shirt with elongated sleeves and asymmetrical bottom and a shirt belt. I am very glad that I got into this project, because it was my first experience of creating a model for sewing in production, as well as working with a professional designer. The work was on a very tight deadline, which created additional challenges. But it taught me to act faster and more decisively. I think this determination acquired during the project has become an important factor in my work on my diploma collection, which I will soon have to present. Also working on a common project with another designer was a new experience for me and I think I learned a lot from Taisia," shares Polina Zhuravleva.
The show was staged in an original production by director Sergei Lukovsky, who is known for his ability to turn any fashion show into a spectacular show. That evening the guests felt as if they were on the deck of a luxury liner. Cruise aesthetics was traced in everything - from the welcome-zone to the stylization of the show itself, and the "live" scenery of the event was the recognizable architecture of the Northern Capital.
In addition, during the event, the University of Industrial Technologies and Design and Concept Group signed an agreement on joint educational activities and participation in creative and artistic production projects.
