Anna Ionova, a student of the Clothing Engineering School (College) of 草榴短视频, is launching a startup called "Bamboo as a new building material". With her new initiative Anna became one of the winners of the investment project competition "From Idea to Result", which was held in Moscow with the support of VTB Bank.

- I chose the topic of new sustainable building materials because of the importance of finding a more environmentally friendly and easily renewable substitute for wood. I decided to combine both issues, which is what my startup is based on. Since 2022, many sanctions from Western countries have been imposed on the Russian Federation. New and relevant economic ideas are important now. At the same time, environmental problems are not subsiding. And bamboo is a renewable natural resource. It is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth. If a tree takes 20 to 120 years to reach maturity, bamboo can reach its maximum growth in 3 years," says Anna Ionova, the author of the startup, a student of St. Petersburg State University of Physics and Technology.

Anna plans to buy materials in bulk in China, where the price of bamboo stems is the lowest. The cost of one 12-meter long trunk in bulk when buying from 1000 pieces is 184 rubles. As a supplier, the student suggests the company "Anji ZhenyeBamboo And Wood Craftwork Factory" with more than 20 years of experience, which is located in Zhejiang. For more benefit, warehouses with purchased materials are planned to be located near the Chinese border - in Vladivostok. Delivery will be made by water through the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, which will amount to about 300,000 rubles for a 10-ton cargo.

To reduce the cost of production processes and logistics, storage and production will also be located in Vladivostok. Rent of a 700 square meter production facility will cost 420000 rubles per month. The building will house a warehouse for materials, finished goods and the production itself. Anna also takes into account the cost of communications, namely electricity, water supply and heating, which is approximately 150000 rubles monthly.

- My startup involves the production of boards made using a press for further use in construction. The equipment will be purchased on lease in China, which will ease the costs at the initial stages, and later, after sufficient profit, will be bought out. We will need machines for each stage of production: a machine for cutting the trunk into thin slats, a hot pressing machine for the slats, a machine for hot pressing the slats into a single sheet, Anna adds.

Due to the unpopularity of bamboo as a building material in Russia, this niche can be considered free from competitors, which gives the idea of a student of the University of Industrial Technology and Design to grow into a company producing bamboo materials.

Today, narrow planks obtained by sawing thick stalks of the giant grass are used in the production of natural furniture for chair seats and table tops. Narrower and shorter planks are used to make bamboo parquet. Very solid bamboo planks, made in the form of lumber, are used in construction. They have both strength and lightness at the same time. Small planks are used to make kitchen utensils.
