In the pavilion of the Russian Society "Znanie" at the exhibition "Russia" at VDNH, the workshop of the federal project "Dream School" has finished its work, which brought together student teams from the regions and experts from the construction industry. Together, they had to create design projects for educational spaces of schools included in the federal overhaul program.
Students and teachers of the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ, as well as the University College of Technology, Modeling and Management, went to Moscow to fulfill an important mission. The focus of their work included the reorganization of Lyceum No. 533 of the Krasnogvardeysky district of St. Petersburg, a school in the village of Razdolye and school No. 6 in Luga.
"During the pre-design study, significant shortcomings were identified in the existing planning solutions of all three school buildings. The lyceum building number 533 of the Krasnogvardeysky district, a typical project of the 60s, originally designed for 480 students, now accommodates almost 2 times more, which is why there is an acute problem of lack of premises. In addition, in this school, as in Razdolsky School, there is no separate assembly hall. In both buildings, there are problems with the organization of entrance spaces, cramped unaesthetic wardrobes and irrational organization of traffic flows. There are enough rooms in Luga Secondary School number 6, but the design of the lobby and recreation areas is very outdated and should be replaced with modern solutions," explains Evgeny Lobanov, curator of the teams, associate professor of the Department of Interior Design and Equipment at Ƶ.
It is worth noting that the workshop "Dream School" is one of the final stages of the work of the federal project of the same name, launched in 2022 on the initiative of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation and the Federal Headquarters of Public Control over the program "Modernization of school education systems". The task is more urgent than ever — to strengthen the results of the implementation of the presidential program for the overhaul of schools: to give young people the opportunity to engage in social design, reboot school spaces, inspire those who make decisions today to make qualitative changes in the school environment. The challenge is obvious — schools built 30 to 40 years ago were built for other tasks, relying on other technological capabilities.
"From the University of Industrial Technology and Design, three student teams are working on the project under the guidance of teachers. I would like to emphasize that the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ has been conducting research in the field of designing educational spaces for many years. The teams interact with school directorates, district administrations, parents and students, the necessary analysis has already been carried out, and the first draft versions have been prepared. The work is in the final stage. The format has been competently integrated into the university's project activities and is being implemented as part of the approbation of the "Teaching by Service" approach. Students hone their practical skills, work in a team and interact with real customers. Experience is certainly valuable, it is he who determines a high—level specialist today," comments Natalia Klimova, Vice-rector for the Development of educational programs at Ƶ.
The algorithm of actions resembles a kind of intensive. Work on projects begins with a trip to Moscow schools, where it was possible to visually assess the competent design of the space and wind up ideas, so to speak, "on the mind". The teams go to Letovo, Skolkovo and Bullfinch schools. The study of functional zones, the methods of designing educational spaces used here, new materials and technologies begins. Next, the team receives its master, a representative of the construction or related industry, who helps to make adjustments to the preliminary design that was already in place at that time. They are experts from Ed Architecture, MARSH Architectural School, ASADOV architectural bureau and Studio 44, Lena Akhmadeeva Design Laboratory, Design4school studio, Moskomarchitecture, representatives of construction and manufacturing companies PIK, Airplane, League and others. In parallel, for two days, at lectures and master classes from federal experts, students study the psychology of school spaces, building codes, and cases of interior solutions in other schools.
"It was important to master the planning methods in a modern school in order to understand what we are moving towards, where is the benchmark to which we can strive in our work. Here I would like to mention the Letovo school — it is both a completely new space and a new approach to learning. My thesis has been formed over time, and it lies in the fact that the dream school cannot be fully formed without changes in the very format of education, in the approach to it," says Emilia Gubarevich, a student at the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ. In the near future, the teams will make the latest edits to the design projects. Next, work will begin with the regional authorities to implement the developed solutions for the overhaul of schools.
