A startup for recycling polypropylene waste into fuel became the winner of the acceleration program of the University of Industrial Technology and Design in 2023. The Plastic Energy project by Ivan Elokhin, a graduate student at Ƶ, will allow enterprises to recycle plastic to produce diesel, which is used for railway, freight, water transport, buses and military equipment.
This season, the University's Industrial Technology Design acceleration program was devoted to new materials used in various industries, such as textile and light industry, energy, medicine and others. The Accelerator's partners were the manufacturer of household chemicals “Novbytchem”, the manufacturer of packages Polygraphoformlenie-FLEXO, the manufacturer of professional hair cosmetics Estel, as well as the brand of eco-cosmetics Grower.
On the eve of summing up the results, a Demo day was held for the participants of the program, where they presented their startups to investors. Its winner in one of the sections was also the aforementioned startup of Ivan Elokhin (IPHE) "Plastic Energy", in the second section Konstantin Melekesov's startup (IITA) "ElevateOptix: Software package for elevator design" won. This is an innovative software solution designed for developers and architects, which greatly simplifies the process of selecting and optimizing elevator systems in buildings. The product solves the problem of efficient allocation of elevator resources, taking into account the parameters of passenger traffic, load capacity and rated speed. The winners were chosen by a jury consisting of eleven experts from St. Petersburg enterprises and investors.
A number of projects were also noted by the industrial partners of the Spbgutd Accelerator. Experts from ESTEL and the Grower brand expressed interest in the startup presented by team leader Anna Sharapova (IPHE). Anna's team creates an innovative cream that contains zinc and silver oxide nanoparticles that impart antimicrobial properties to a cosmetic product, as well as accelerate the regeneration of the damaged stratum corneum of the skin and protect against UV rays. The cream is rich in natural ingredients that moisturize and nourish the skin, as well as restore its lipid balance in a short period of time.
ESTEL was introduced and Ksenia Antonova's startup (IPHE) became interested. Its universal technology for the production of cationic surfactants (surfactants) for the production of cosmetic products offers a way to obtain a wide range of quaternary ammonium salts that cosmetic companies use in the production of hair care products. The startup will reduce logistics costs due to production in Russia.
“Novbytchem”, the industrial partner of the Ƶ Accelerator, has identified three startups. They also included Ivan Elokhin's startup, Kushnazar Koshokbaev's (HTSE) POLYTan project, dedicated to the development of technology for using tree bark to produce natural polyphenolic tannin compounds and their processing into polyurethane glue, and Yulia Vilacheva's startup (IPHE) for the development of carbon sorbents modified with nanoparticles. They are intended for use in personal respiratory protection equipment as a ready-made filler that provides full protection from aerosols of organic and inorganic substances for workers in the chemical and oil and gas industries. And the cost of such a filler is 30% cheaper than industrial analogues.
Representatives of Polygraph-FLEXO were interested in the startup KormIl, whose team is developing affordable fish food for farms and individuals. The feed does not harm the environment, because it uses active sludge, which is formed as waste.
Denis Kharin, another Accelerator expert, head of the Hadbridge Educational Center, assessed them as promising and offered long-term support to three startup projects: "Developing Chemistry Application", "Virtual Laboratory", and the Oldstil clothing brand. Igor Trunov, a serial entrepreneur, investor, graduate of Harvard and Stanford Business Schools, MIT, and Forbes expert, also expressed his willingness to support technology teams of startups from the University of Industrial Technology and Design.
About other startups that Ƶ students worked on as part of the university's acceleration program:
Topicell.
The technology helps pharmaceutical companies solve the problem of rapid production of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) using jerusalem artichoke stem processing technology.
An enzyme catalyst on polymer carriers.
An enzyme catalyst is a product that helps biological water treatment plants to effectively treat wastewater without secondary contamination using enzymes on a polymer carrier. The startup will allow the oxidation of bioresistant organic substances, for example, lignin, which will bring significant benefits to pulp and paper enterprises.
Development of an autonomous modular complex for processing municipal solid waste into thermal insulation material – foam glass.
The startup offers a modular complex for the reclamation of municipal solid waste (MSW), which can not only partially solve the problem of MSW accumulation, but also serve as a production base for thermal insulation material – foam glass, widely used in construction. The startup's target audience is construction and heating companies, as well as private housing construction.
A microporous layer in fuel cells.
A microporous layer is a part of a fuel cell, which is a carbon–based layer with fluoroplast particles. The startup aims to develop and create an improved technology for producing a microporous layer for low-temperature fuel cells using domestic raw materials. The product is intended for companies engaged in the development of a microporous layer, the assembly of fuel cells, as well as enterprises in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles, mechanical engineering and space construction.
Secondary raw materials made of polypropylene.
The startup aims to recycle polypropylene fiber into secondary raw materials and launch this technology in Russia.
Eco-friendly lubricant composition based on water and alcohol.
The technology of manufacturing an ecological lubricant composition involves the synthesis of water, monatomic alcohol and thickeners, as well as the abandonment of the use of petroleum products. The lubricant has tribotechnical properties better than known analogues obtained using classical technology from oil. It is non-toxic, does not cause allergic reactions, does not require disposal after resource development, and is comparable in cost. The lubricant composition can be used in transmission units of transport and transport and technological complexes, various gearboxes and mechanisms, including in the food industry. In addition, by selecting the concentrations of the components, it is possible to obtain lubricating compositions according to individual customer requirements.
The startup solves the problem of import substitution, reduces the cost of maintenance, repair and disposal. Savings can range from 50 to 100 thousand rubles per ton of product compared to classic lubricants.
Bonding of tufted carpets with thermoplastic binders.
The technology helps manufacturers of rolled tufted floor coverings to solve the problem of shortage of domestic latex binder of high quality and high energy intensity, as well as its replacement with cheaper, affordable and easy-to-process thermoplastic polyethylene films. The startup will reduce production costs by at least 15%, save 20% of production space and increase productivity.
Production of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) from wood waste.
Currently, the MCC is not produced in Russia. In addition, there is no optimal technology for processing wood waste in Russia, and most of the illiquid wood and wood waste is incinerated. The startup proposes to solve this problem by producing a chemical-thermomechanical mass (HTMM) from wood waste by extrusion, from which the MCC will be obtained.
A developing chemistry application.
The mobile application will help to involve schoolchildren and students in the study of such a complex subject as chemistry through games, interactive tests and videos.
