Equipment for rescuers from innovative materials, developed by scientists of St.Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design, took the third place in the TOP-10 inventions of St. Petersburg in 2023, compiled by the Russian information and analytical agency "Rosbalt". The overalls were developed jointly with specialists from the startup ArktikTex of the North-West Nanocenter and the University of the State Fire Service of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The outfit is designed to protect a person from both fire and hypothermia at the same time. It is designed for firefighters and rescuers working in the low temperatures of the Arctic zone. To increase fire-resistant properties of firefighter's overalls, the textile fabric was treated with a specially developed composition of modified composites based on carbon nanostructures. To reduce the risk of hypothermia when working at low temperatures, heating modules made of electrically conductive fabric created with the use of graphene nanotubes were integrated into the inner part of the outfit. At the same time, such fabrics can also be used for other purposes - for example, for upholstery of public transportation seats, in the space and aviation industries.

"St. Petersburg is often called not only the cultural but also the scientific capital of Russia. In the rating of regions by the level of scientific and technological development, compiled by the results of 2022, the Northern Capital is in the top three. Not surprisingly, St. Petersburg is firmly in second place among the constituent entities of the Russian Federation in terms of the coefficient of inventive activity, second only to Moscow," Rosbalt noted.
