Sabina Hajiyeva, a student of the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ, came to St. Petersburg from Azerbaijan. In the small town in the north of the country where Sabina lived, women's professions are considered to be a teacher and a doctor. The girl was expected to choose teaching at a music school. But she always dreamed of becoming an architect, like Zaha Hadid – the first woman to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize. Read about the design of modern mosques, the Orthodox choir and the opening of a women's club at the university, which helps students adapt to a new life away from home, in our interview.
Sabina, tell us why you chose architecture?
Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming an architect, I loved to draw and most often painted at home. Later I started studying the works of architects, especially Zaha Hadid inspired me. She was born in Iraq, and no one believed that she would achieve anything, but today her structures are being built all over the world. She has a very unusual style, it seemed impossible to build such buildings, but she did it.
I lived in the small Azerbaijani town of Khachmaz, girls here most often become teachers or doctors, these professions are considered female. Architecture is not one of them. That's why my parents sent me to a music school, they wanted me to become a music teacher. I graduated from music school in piano class with honors, won competitions, but when it came time to choose a profession, I said that I wanted to study architecture, and in order to get art training, I would first enter the Academy of Arts in Baku. Mom finally supported me, and we went to the entrance exams.
I took only pens and pencils with me to Baku, but at the exam I saw that the rest of the applicants came with tablets, watercolors, oil paints, and I ran to a store nearby to buy it all. And next to the Academy there is the famous building of Zaha Hadid ... I have always been engaged in drawing as an amateur, I did not know professional terms, did not understand paints, did not know anything about perspective and other rules of composition, and even on the exam I drew watercolors for the first time! But the commission highly appreciated my work, and I entered. I also graduated from the Academy with honors, but I didn't see myself as an artist, I still wanted to become an architect.
How did you choose a university for architectural education?
Petersburg is my favorite city, I dreamed of visiting it and would never have thought that I would live here! I started searching the Internet for the best universities in the field of design and architecture, and in all the tops I came across Ƶ.
I consider myself Azerbaijani, my parents are also Azerbaijanis, but in fact I was born in Volgograd, and I have known Russian since childhood. Despite this, the first months of study were very difficult. It was necessary to look for a new environment, new hobbies, to get to know the city. I still carry with me a card with a metro plan, which I was given one of the first days at the entrance to the station.
I couldn't get used to it for a long time, but then I met the guys from the Center for the Adaptation of Foreign Students of our university, and I also joined the Student Council and the Trade Union Committee, participated in all their events, helped with the decorations.
You founded a women's club at the Center for the Adaptation of Foreign Students of Ƶ. Tell us about his goals and activities.
Together with my friend from the Center, we noticed that many girls, in particular of the Muslim girls, find it more difficult to adapt to another country, and besides, they feel uncomfortable in an environment where there are young people. Therefore, we decided to create a comfortable space only for girls, where no one will feel superfluous. The goal of our club is to help them not only with adaptation, but also with implementation. We organize lectures and master classes, where we invite speakers who are professionals in their field, for example, in time management. Sometimes we organize sports events, for example, yoga practices. The club has expanded, and now not only foreign students participate in our events, but also all interested girls.
And we also conduct psychotherapy sessions where girls share what bothers them. The first year of study is the most difficult, some students face burnout, miss home. We help them rethink their achievements. After all, we came from another country, entered the best university, live in such a beautiful city. How can we not appreciate it?
What do you do besides study and club?
Oddly enough, I continue to study music. Despite the fact that I am a Muslim, I sing in an Orthodox church choir, we perform in cathedrals, we go to other cities, for example, to Veliky Novgorod. I've always liked the sound of church singing, but I didn't think I'd be allowed to do it. I asked both from the Orthodox Church and from my parents, no one was against it. This is how I learn about another religion and tell about my own.
For a while I worked at the Museum of Nonconformist Art in the Art Center «Pushkinskaya, 10». I often do volunteer work in museums, organize exhibitions myself, I like to go to the theater. I also create handmade jewelry from different materials – fabric, beads and clay. Sometimes I sew bags, purses. I also learned all this myself.
Now I am studying Arabic and Italian, I go to educational lectures, career pitchings, where you can get a job offer. By the way, at such events we often find speakers for our women's club.
Have your hopes about architectural education been fulfilled?
At first it was very difficult for me, because working in this field requires not only artistic training, it is also important to own special computer programs. I like that the design of the spatial environment, which I study at Ƶ, combines architecture, interior design, and landscape design. This allows us to see the project as a whole.
I have just started my third year, but I already know the topic of my future thesis – it will be a project of a modern mosque. Most mosques are built in the same style, they are insanely beautiful, but I would like to create something new. I studied the architecture of mosques around the world and found one unusual Sanjaklar mosque in Istanbul, made in a minimalist style. The main part of the mosque is underground, from above only the minaret is a tower from where the azan is sung, calling for prayer, and large steps covered with greenery that lead to the underground part of the structure. Everything inside is made of stone, it looks strict, but beautiful. I would like to create something similar by combining religious traditions and a new architectural style.
