Alhussein Gamal, a master's student at the Institute of Design and Arts of Ƶ, came to St. Petersburg from Alexandria. At home, he graduated from the Bachelor's degree in Architecture and was a famous artist who was invited to teach at schools and universities in different cities, including the capital. Now Alhussein is studying art history at the Ƶ and plans to get a scientific degree. Read about how Russia has become a new home for a student from Egypt and how a foreigner can find the key to the heart of a Russian person in our interview.
Alhussein, what did you know about Russia before you moved here?
I only knew that there are Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia! I was asked: "Hoss, how are you going to Russia?". Everyone was shocked why I chose Russia, and now I'm shocked that they asked me this question! After all, when I arrived in St. Petersburg, I realized that I had come to heaven! I used to think Italy was the most beautiful country, but now I'm sure it's Russia. When I walk, I always look around. I am an architect by education, so I often stop to look at a building. Every time I pass by the Kazan Cathedral, I take a picture of it. I have visited the Russian Museum and the Hermitage many times. The Hermitage is my home, my life, my atmosphere. I also like the area next to Gazprom Arena, where I ride a scooter.
Why did you choose PROMTECHDESIGN University?
I wanted to study to be an artist, but when I started choosing a university, I realized that in the master's degree you can't just draw, you have to do science, so I decided to study art history. I chose from several universities in St. Petersburg, but when I came to Ƶ, it seemed to me that this was the Hermitage! And I was also met here by very kind people. I can say for sure that people here love their work. If there is a problem, then the next day it will not be.
When the academic year started, it was very difficult at first, I called my mom, said I wanted to go home. I didn't understand well what they were saying at lectures, because then I couldn't even write my name in Russian! I was asked: "Hos, do you understand?". I said I understood, but I cried (laughs). But I was lucky with the group and with the teachers. I made a lot of friends. For the first time I felt at home when I came to the Center for the Adaptation of Foreign Students of our university. I constantly participate in his events, for example, in the African Day, in the celebration of Easter, we shot a film together about the feeling of loneliness. And now it's not just a Center for me, it's my family. I also help other international students myself.
You also traveled as part of the delegation of Ƶ to your hometown of Alexandria, where the presentation of the university for applicants took place. Tell us about it. I shoot funny videos about my adaptation in Russia and post them on VKontakte. That's how Konstantin Antipov (the head of the information representation of the university) found me and offered me to go to Egypt as a translator together with the university delegation. I was shocked! When I called my mom and told her that I was going to Alexandria, she asked me with horror: "Expulsion?". In Russian, she knows only this word and also "good morning". She couldn't believe it. And when my mother came to the event at the Russian House in Alexandria, where I translated and spoke to the applicants and their parents myself, she cried with happiness. It was one of the best moments of my life. They say in Russia: "You can't easily pull a fish out of a pond."
What surprises you the most in Russia?
I arrived in Russia in February. Before that, I only saw snow in the refrigerator! I had warm clothes, but not for the Russian winter, and my shoes were constantly slipping. And then I found out that they also swim here in this weather! First they go to the sauna, and then they dive into cold water. Even in Russia, people are a little closed, but I know how to find the key to them. Russians are very funny. If you cheer them up, they may smile. And if they smile, you know it's from the heart. And I'm a comedian, so I often see their smiles.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I would like to teach drawing. In Egypt, I worked as a teacher in schools and universities in different cities of the country, including Alexandria and Cairo. I posted my work on social networks and became famous.
I am also a little known in Russia thanks to my blog on VKontakte and active participation in university events. And I also work as a model, people like my hair!
At first, drawing was just a hobby, but I trained a lot. It's not a talent, because I used to draw very poorly. I mostly paint portraits. I am interested in this genre. For my master's thesis, I chose the topic of family portrait in Italian art of the XIV-XVI centuries. Next year I will enter the postgraduate program of our university and I dream of staying in Russia, this is already my home. I have a twin brother who lives in Alexandria, but now he also wants to come to St. Petersburg and study with me at Ƶ.
