07 June

To work out a planning decision taking into account expansion of the area and to offer a new concept of development – such tasks were put before the students of Institute of Design of the Spatial Environment of Ƶ by the management of “Comfort Hotel” situated in the center of St. Petersburg. The students presented their ideas at the university’s “Boiling Point – PromTechDesign”. For further implementation, they chose the project for the reconstruction of the “Comfort Hotel” into an apartment hotel called “Gertsen”, designed by Ekaterina Golovko.

For two months the students have been studying the technical documentation of the hotel, getting acquainted with the competitive advantages of the hotel, meeting with its management to consider the wishes of the customer in their projects.

“Comfort Hotel” is a hotel located on the corner of Bolshaya Morskaya and Gorokhovaya Streets in St. Petersburg. This building once housed and worked for famous personalities of Russia. The creation of the project to reconstruct the hotel in the center of the city has a number of constraints, but the students of the University of Industrial Technology and Design have managed to offer interesting solutions for the development of hotel spaces. The work of Ekaterina Golovko won in the competition. Second place went to the team of students Aigul Khakimova, Leda Nikitina and Sofya Fomicheva. Third place went to Karina Gorbatova, fourth place to Daria Gulyakova, fifth place to the joint work of Angelina Scherbakova and Alina Karelina. All projects were executed under the direction of associate professor of spatial environment design department of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design Andrey Zuev with the real support of Julia Vetrova, director of the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design Julia Vetrova.

Ekaterina Golovko presented her concept of the Herzen Aparthotel:

“The name of the apartment hotel was not chosen by chance. The Russian publicist and educator Aleksandr Ivanovich Hertzen lived in this house from 1830 to 1841. I also suggested an idea for the room stock, according to which each room has its own story, associated with a famous person of St. Petersburg. As this is an apartment hotel, in each room I placed not only a place to relax and a bathroom, but also its own kitchen. In terms of design I have divided the rooms into two color schemes: calming grassy green and invigorating orange and peach.

In her design project, the student included special rooms for people with disabilities with the option of adding extra beds, public spaces for guests to relax, a photo area on the first floor, a children’s playroom, and a number of rooms for staff. Ekaterina has also used the attic area as a room and lounge area. The designer proposes to change the facade of the attic by installing skylights.

Aigul Khakimova, Leda Nikitina and Sofya Fomicheva have presented a reconstruction project of the “Comfort Hotel” into an apartment hotel called “BM APART”. The letters in the proposed name are deciphered as “Bolshaya Morskaya” – the name of the street on which the hotel is located. Location in the historic city center is the undoubted competitive advantage of the hotel, which the designers decided to emphasize. During the creation of the technical part of the project the designers used an open planning solution with the possibility of partial zoning. For each category of rooms they developed special color solutions. For example, the standard rooms were designed in maroon, the family rooms in deep blue, and the VIP rooms in bright orange.

Karina Gorbatova presented the concept of a hotel whose design doesn’t depend on time and trends. The interior, which contains elements of modern and classic styles, wil always remain relevant. The main idea of the student was to create a space that would be both cozy and elegant. She used eye-pleasing combinations of shades and natural materials. For each floor a specific color scheme is defined: blue, burgundy and beige, so that each guest can choose a room to suit their mood. The blue color in the interior refers to the history of St. Petersburg as a seaport, burgundy is associated with luxury, style and confidence, the beige tones are more neutral and universal.

When developing the concept, student Daria Gulyakova set herself the task to not overload the space, emphasizing lightness and restraint in her stylistic solutions. For her, it was important to create a comfortable place that makes you want to return to. The student divided the rooms into three categories: standard, comfort and luxury, which differ from each other in size. The designer worked with calm, light colors such as beige, white, and light gray. For the finish, she chose natural wood, marble-like porcelain stoneware, and a variety of wall paneling options. The interior style of the apartments is mixed, it has elements of neoclassical and minimalism styles.

Angelina Scherbakova and Alina Karelina also used blue hues in their design for the standard room, but in this case the choice of color is tied to the status of St. Petersburg as the Northern Capital. A decorative chandelier, ochre cushions and comfortable universal furniture adorned the interior. Luxue level rooms are decorated in a cold green shade. The color refers to the plenty of green spaces in the city including parks, gardens, squares and simply green streets. Every detail of the rooms works to create a cozy atmosphere for a comfortable stay. However, when planning the hotel interiors, the students sought to create not only cozy, but also memorable rooms, so that after visiting the Northern Capital guests will remember not only the city, but also the hotel where they stayed.
