Theater and Design: ST. Petersburg State University of Theatre and Design hosted the gala concert of the OPERA & PODIUM project
12 May

In the Concert Hall of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design and the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, a gala concert of the international cultural and humanitarian interuniversity youth project “OPERA & PODIUM” was held, which symbolizes the synthesis of opera and design creativity, performed by students of two creative universities of the Northern Capital - St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N.A Korsakov.

At 6 p.m. the symphonic orchestra of the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory Theater played extracts from the operas "Eugene Onegin", "The Queen of Spades" by Tchaikovsky and "The Snow Maiden", "Sadko" and "The Tsar's Bride" by Rimsky-Korsakov.

The five student teams, made up of Russian and international students from different fields of study, have spent the entire academic year attending lectures, creative meetings, and master classes with art historians, musicians, and stage designers. They have also visited opera houses and attended opera productions, in order to create concepts for scenes from the above-mentioned operas, under the guidance of their tutors. Preparation for the gala concert included working on opera scenes, creating costumes and scenery, and themed paintings and drawings.

Arina Shilova, a student at the Institute of Costume Design at the St. Petersburg State University of Pediatrics and Design, worked on the designs and costumes for the production of The Tsar's Bride by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov:

- I have been living with opera since I was a child, my mother and stepfather are opera singers. I've sort of lived behind the scenes of the theater, so the project is very close to me. At first we didn't have a precise concept for the production, but I dreamed of seeing a cyberpunk scene, and I tried to do my first Marfa costume in the appropriate atmosphere. It was difficult to find the right fabrics and tones, but we pulled it off. I came into this project with great enthusiasm! Sometimes I was even afraid, because the scale was so big, I was afraid that I could fail, but it is not in my principles to quit before it is finished.

Varvara Doronina, a student at the Institute of Information Technology and Automation at the St. Petersburg State University of Theatre Arts and Design, created the media set for the performance of the opera Sadko:

- When I first saw the actors in costumes sewn by designers from my group, I was shocked, the level of the Mariinsky Theater, no less. And when I realized on stage that the sets I and the other media designers created were in incredible harmony with the costumes, I was very happy. During the process, at times they seemed a little empty to me, I wanted more details. But when I saw the whole picture with the costumes, I realized how right the mentors and director were when they asked me to make them simpler. This project is an unbelievable experience of teamwork.

Anastasia Dzhioeva, a student of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, was the director of a scene from Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin in the project:

- There were a lot of concerns about the concept, because this is probably the most famous opera in the OPERA & PODIUM project, it imposed a huge responsibility on our team. We wanted to bring something new, our own vision, but we also tried to keep the original intention of the composer. I feel that this is a significant professional breakthrough for me. The project really gave me the opportunity to be creative, to create my own interpretations and ideas.

Elena Shiyanova is a student at the University of Industrial Technology and Design. She was involved in the Opera & Podium project, creating the dress of Vesna and part of the costume of Tsar Berendey for a scene from the opera Snegurochka:

- It took many meters of fabric to create my image. Initially a skin tone corset was sewn with metal bones and eyelets inserted. And on top of the corset was hand-stitched tulle in two shades of green. A lot of effort went into making the dress. I am very happy that my creation will be on stage.

Ksenia Kuvshinova is a student at St. Petersburg State University of Applied Informatics in Design. In the project Xenia created interactive scenery:

- The mechanics of creating the conceived scenery is as follows: we stirred paints in glasses of water, set up the equipment and started filming, pouring paints into the aquarium. After shooting all the necessary material, we began editing, mixing the shots with music and adding graphics.

During the intermission the audience was also not bored - in the foyer of the concert hall there was an exhibition of graphic works by students of the Painting and Drawing Department of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design based on the presented opera scenes, as well as an exhibition of sketches and decorations for the presented productions.
