St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (SUITD) and St. Petersburg Foundation for the Support of Innovations and Youth Initiatives have opened a digital exhibition «Beauty requires 2.0. The History of Soviet Fashion» in Zarenkov Gallery art space. The visitors of the exhibition have learned about the stages of fashion development in the Soviet Union, got acquainted with the photo documents, periodical and iconic items of clothing that have become symbols of the era. The central place was taken by the exhibits for virtual dress and accessory fitting of those years in augmented reality. They were reconstructed by young digital designers, including students of SUITD. The gallery space is equipped with gadgets and mirrors for guests to «put on» Soviet clothes and hats and see how they would look at that time. The exhibition was rounded off with a digital fashion show.
Zarenkov Gallery is a point of positive art on the ma of St. Petersburg, harmoniously combining the edges of tradition and modernity. The Gallery is the place for the creative symbiosis of artists and art space that brings together cultures. This modern platform combines different forms and directions of art: painting, sculpture, photography and modern (VR) technologies.
—&Բ;With digital representation, we allowed the viewer to have an immersive experience with the fashion of the USSR. It’s more interesting than just looking at photos or molds,&Բ;— said Ekaterina Likhacheva, a digital designer, graduate student in Fashion Tech at SUITD.
Before the start of the project «Beauty requires 2.0. The History of Soviet Fashion» curators began to search for information with the help of the St. Petersburg Archival Committee. Their task was not only to collect information about the periods of Soviet fashion, but also to find patterns for sewing clothes for each decade.
—&Բ;As curators of the exhibition we searched and analyzed a lot of materials, collected patterns and illustrations for designers and they chose which images they wanted to work with,&Բ;— said Polina Dudareva, the curator of the exhibition and Fashion Tech student of SUITD.
Then the digital designers visualized clothes in special computer programs. With their help, they can create virtual models, animate them and try them on a 3D human avatar.
Alena Kolupaeva, SUITD student, one of digital designers, designed two dress models of the 1950s for the exhibition, using original patterns from the «Album of Fashion Patterns with Cut» published by the Leningrad Fashion House in 1959:
—&Բ;The development of the virtual models was divided into several stages. First, I transferred patterns and assembled the product in a virtual garment design program, then created its simulation on a digital avatar, selected fabric, applied textures and worked on decorations.
Anastasia Tissen, also one of the digital designers and graduate student of Fashion Tech at SUITD, created an image from the original pattern from 1964, consisting of a blouse and skirt:
—&Բ;I digitized the details of the suit and connected them to each other. This process is reminiscent of real sewing. Then I turned on the physics simulation and the outfit was put on the virtual model. The fabric has to look realistic, taking gravity into account.
After creating 3D models of the finished dresses designers uploaded their images to an app for virtual fitting. This technology will allow the visitors of the exhibition in Zarenkov Gallery to try on the digital costumes, pointing with the phone camera to the special QR code. In total the designers have created 37 images for trying on.
When creating the costumes, which can only be seen with the help of the gadget, technical support was provided by the Laboratory of Virtual Fashion and Digital Design of SUITD, where equipment for scanning people, collecting their measurements and getting virtual clothes located, as well as software for creating virtual clothes and working with
—&Բ;Today designers and brands create digital prototypes of new collections, and many bloggers buy digital clothes for photos on social networks. We used this technology for historical costumes that have been lost or damaged. The computer reconstruction of clothes, which allows restoring the items in virtual reality and significantly expands the possibilities of clothes display through digital technology,&Բ;— said Polina Egarmin, curator of Fashion Tech master program in SUITD, producer of the project.
