“Those were my golden years”. Jonny Garbi about news website and helping foreign students research.
Jonny came to Saint-Petersburg from Syria. He is studying in the last year of postgraduate course in High School of printing and media technologies of Saint-Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design and preparing for the defense of the candidate's thesis. After getting a degree, Jonny is going to return to his homeland to teach at Damascus University. Read about journalist education in Russia and Syria, studying creolized texts and experience of studying in a foreing country in an interview with Jonny Garbi.
- Jonny, tell us about your studying in Syria, please. What’s the difference between journalist education in your homeland and here in Russia?
- When I went to Damascus University in Syria the faculty of media just opened its doors for entrants. I could choose one of the four educational directions - journalism, radio and television, electronic media or advertising and PR. Journalism was teached on philological faculty before that. There is no place in my country where you can study journalism instead. It’s difficult to get into university - having a profession is prestigious, because influencer/media worker does an intellectual job and helps to solve social problems.
During my studying I did an internship in the editorial offices of news portals, also I was working in Syrian official news agency in my last year, but I decided to continue my research in a postgraduate course after ending my studying in university to teach and do science in future. I used opportunities, which Rossotrudnichestvo provides and went to Saint-Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. This university has a nice science history. Many Syrians, who graduated from it, are working as teachers in Damascus and other cities of my country. Besides that I was interested in media design. In general, there are lots of excellent universities in Russia, which give high - quality education and there is a large amount of educational directions related to journalism, publishing, public relations, printing production and media formation.
- You are finishing your candidate's thesis. Are your studies related to design in the media industry?
- In Damascus University I studied electronic media and worked as a copy editor of information agency’s website, during my studying in postgraduate course I also was working as a main copy editor for online media. That’s why I was interested in doing this research, which would be about Syrian and Russian quality of news portals from a design point of view. I narrowed down the topic to assessing the impact of creolized texts on the perception of information by users. Сreolized text - is a text in a wide sense. It consists of two parts - verbal and unverbal. It’s a combination of text and a picture, which complement each other in meaning. The point of creolized text is this: If you remove the image, the meaning of this text will not be understood. And the other way around.
For example, infographic. Someone say that one picture can be worth 1000 words. The same thing you can say about infographics. But without any text we won’t be able to understand what those images illustrate, and also a few signatures won’t give us full information.
In my dissertation work I’m doing experimental research. I created two websites: one of them has only ordinary texts and photos, while another has creolized texts. During the experiment group of students had to explore the information on websites and then answer my questions about content. My goal is to understand whether creolized text helps us to learn information better.
- Tell us about your experience of studying in Russia as a foreign student.
- At first I had problems with adaptation, but I shared a room in the dormitory with Russian students and could practice Russian language regularly. Still, it was a hard time. This experience showed me how importent is to support other foreign students. That's how I started to help students, who came to study in from abroad, solve problems mostly related to dorm life. Once I managed to help the postgraduate department with a hard task: I reconnected with the student from Iraq, who went back to his homeland and was unable to return to Russia during the pandemic.
And still I recommend every student to get an experience of studying abroad and choose Russia. This country is advanced in scientific and industrial terms, which is really important for Syria because of political, economic and social ties between our countries. I’m sure that learning Russian can offer Syrians new employment opportunities.
I enjoy living here. After thesis defense I will have to return to Syria and teach in university but I plan to visit my Russian friends at least once every 2 years. I’m grateful to every teacher and person who helped me during my study here. Thank you, those were my golden years.
