Ƶ scientists have found a way to create a new textile material from non-recyclable silk processing waste
01 July

The unique properties of natural silk are well known, the complex of which does not possess any of the synthetic or natural fibers. Silk is extremely durable, absorbs moisture well and lets in air, is biocompatible and does not cause allergies, is resistant to microbes, bacteria and fungi (what is different from cotton).

But a few people know that only half of the raw silk reaches the consumer in the form of products. The second half ends up in waste.

The scientific group of Ƶ, which includes Olga Ivanovna Yakovleva, Master of the Department of Chemical Technologies named after prof. A.A. Kharkharov, has been dealing with the problem of waste disposal of valuable biopolymers for many years. She told about this on the air of Channel One on May 31, 2021.

Olga Ivanovna is one of the authors of the development of a method for obtaining material from non-recyclable silk processing waste.

“Fibrous silk waste is treated with a chemical composition and a uniform canvas is formed from them on the carding unit. Then this canvas is fastened on a needle-punching machine. The result is a durable, breathable and highly porous material that can have different thicknesses and surface densities. Then, silver and copper nanoparticles are formed in the porous structure of this material by impregnation with an aqueous solution of salts. By applying the neural network method to mathematically process the results of a multifactorial experiment (reagent concentrations, impregnation conditions), we learned how to control the number and size of nanoparticles applied.

As a result of processing, non-woven fabric from silk waste has bactericidal and fungicidal properties (all applied fungi, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and viruses die on its surface within 24 hours),” said Olga Ivanovna.

This material can be used for medical applications, in everyday life or for creating elements of sportswear and shoes.
