Books as a major project: Ƶ launches a forum on the life of books in the world of hybrid technologies
19 May

On 23 May 2025, Ƶ will host the 3rd Forum on the Life of Books in the World of Hybrid Technologies as part of the 20th St. Petersburg International Book Fair. This year, the organisers have chosen a very interesting and multifaceted theme: ‘Books as a major project’.

The forum will take the form of an intellectual battle. Leading experts from the book industry, writers, publishers, book producers, actors and literary critics will debate and discuss how large projects are created; who they are: new roles, players and formats of books; how collaborations between different platforms expand the reading audience; which promotion strategies are most successful and what the future holds for books in the context of creativity and new technologies.

Konstantin Antipov, head of the information representation department at Ƶ, scientific director of the forum ‘The Life of Books in the World of Hybrid Technologies’:

‘Our forum will raise for the first time a whole range of issues related to the rapid transformation of books, which today are born out of the closest interaction between authors, technology and marketing. Once again, our experts will try to look into the near future of the industry and find answers to new challenges. Will literary creativity retain its independent value for readers and for culture? Is there a risk of book content becoming subservient to the machinery of digital technology and marketing, of readers becoming lumpenised, of authors being turned into craftsmen on a huge, soulless conveyor belt of large commercial projects? And this is just one of the hottest topics in the intellectual battle.’

Svetlana Zorin, editor-in-chief of Knizhnaya Industriya magazine, president of the Association of Book Distributors:

‘Of course, content is king. But thanks to the artistry of publishers, editors, printers, producers, screenwriters, directors, and actors, this content is poured into many precious vessels. As a result, entire universes are created around books — TV series, games, audiobooks, films, podcasts, and theatrical productions. At the forum, we will discuss how large book projects created at the intersection of text, music, acting, and digital technology not only drive the book industry forward, but also greatly increase the significance of books, attracting more and more new readers to the world of reading.’

The forum's experts will include Tatyana Gorskaya, CEO of AST-Azbuka Publishing House; Vera Bogdanova, writer, translator, and literary critic; Yulia Mishkuts, content director at Yandex Books; Yulia Mishkuts, general producer at Vimbo; Mikhail Litvakov, Russian theatre and film actress Marina Lisovets, director of strategic marketing and development at LitRes; Sergey Anisimov, CEO of Podpisnye Izdaniya; and Mikhail Ivanov, CEO of Podpisnye Izdaniya.

The meeting will be moderated by Konstantin Antipov, Head of Information Representation at Ƶ, Scientific Director of the forum ‘The Life of Books in the World of Hybrid Technologies,’ and Svetlana Zorin, Editor-in-Chief of Knizhnaya Industriya magazine and President of the Association of Book Distributors.

An experiment in integrating artificial intelligence into typography.

The second part of the forum will be a digital battle between graphic design students. The experiment, designed to determine whether artificial intelligence can work with typography, will consist of the following: first, the team will create a poster or billboard on the theme ‘The Cultural Code of City S.’ using only typography and fonts by Vladimir Efimov, author of the ‘Petersburg’ font. In other words, the young specialists will first create typographic versions of the poster without using AI and neural networks in order to demonstrate the font basis of the city's identity. In the second stage, they will have to rework the result using AI and neural network technologies, primarily using typography. The degree of AI application and author's refinement in the final version is at the discretion of the team members. The teams will present and defend their projects, and the jury, consisting of experts from the first session of the forum, will evaluate the students' work and select the winners.

The digital battle will be moderated by Galina Ustinova, project manager of the Sytin Case competition and head of the marketing and communications department at First Model Printing House, and Elena Rymshina, curator of independent projects and member of the expert council of the Sytin Case competition.

The forum will be held on 23 May 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design, located at 18 Bolshaya Morskaya Street.

Participation in the forum is by only.
