Problems of monumental art discussed at the Ƶ
18 March

The University of Industrial Technologies and Design hosted the international conference "Actual Problems of Monumental Art", which was attended by researchers from Russia and foreign countries. This year's conference was dedicated to the anniversary of one of the greatest masters of Soviet painting, Geliy Korzhev (1925-2012), who brought up a whole galaxy of muralists. The conference also included an international exhibition and competition, which traditionally featured works by both professionals and young artists.

"The experience of turning to the work of Geliy Korzhev, who remained faithful to the truth in life and art, is extremely important. The participants of the plenary session noted the scale of this master's vision and embodiment of historical subjects, the desire to reveal both the heroic and tragic sides of the events of the revolution and the Great Patriotic War, and the deeply dramatic experience of the contradictions of modernity. This approach to the past and present is also important for contemporary muralists who address themes with a pronounced civic content. For this reason, the range of issues raised during the conference was also related to the aesthetics of the austere style, a key phenomenon in Soviet art in the late 1950s and the first half of the 1960s."

Daria Antipina, Head of the Department of Monumental Art at St. Petersburg State University of Applied Sciences

The reports of experts from St. Petersburg and Moscow presented various facets of Geliy Korzhev's work in the context of the fate of harsh style and realism in Russian art of the twentieth century. The speakers raised issues related to the history and theory of monumental painting and sculpture, as well as the training of future muralists. The conference participants discussed the development of monumental painting in pre-revolutionary Russia and foreign countries, as well as the problems of art synthesis in the past and present, the use of various materials by the muralist, the specifics of church art at the current stage, the peculiarities of visual perception of works of monumental painting and sculpture.

The discussion was attended by teachers of art universities and art historians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Yekaterinburg, Izhevsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, as well as China.

The international exhibition-competition "Creative Spring. Courage knows no oblivion... 80 years of Victory!" The exhibition features works by young and professional artists dedicated to the most important commemorative anniversary celebrated this year. The Nevsky Palette factory provides prizes to the laureates of the exhibition. Student works made up the exposition at the university's "Boiling Point – PromTechDesign", where a number of conference sections were held.

During the days of the conference, master classes on monumental art were organized for its participants at Ƶ. Maria Dokuchaeva, an assistant at the Department of Monumental Art at St. Petersburg State University, conducted a master class on interior decoration using hand-weaving techniques, Irina Baranova, a senior lecturer at the department, taught Roman mosaics, Yana Alexandrova, a senior lecturer, showed the secrets of enamel, and Sergey Khvalov, an associate professor at the department, demonstrated the technique of creating stained glass windows.
