The results of the architectural competition "Library of Game Practices" for the renovation of the children's library on Bolshaya Porokhovskaya Street were summed up in the library and art residence "SHKAF". The competition is organized by the Krasnogvardeysky District Library System in cooperation with the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technology and Design. The jury was presented with five projects from the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of Ƶ. The winner was the concept of university students "Through the lines to the letter".
The aim of the competition is to create an organic, user–friendly, multifunctional and safe library space for children. The university's design teams were led by Evgeny Lobanov, Associate Professor of the Department of Interior Design and Equipment at Ƶ, and Sofya Shamanova, Assistant Professor of the Department of Spatial Environment Design at Ƶ. The organizers of the competition were Marina Shvets, Director of the Central Library System of the Krasnogvardeysky district, Anna Goncharova, head of the Children's Library No. 4, and Anastasia Guseva, head of the library and art residence SHKAF.
The first place in the competition was taken by a team of students from the University of Industrial Technology and Design, which included Valeria Vasilyeva, Anna Potko, Tatiana Rigina, Ekaterina Fedyuk. They presented the project of the Library of game practices "Bukva".
The designers worked on the redevelopment of the space, the design of the mezzanine, the introduction of transformable furniture and the placement of the library collection. In addition, they needed to provide a place for various additional activities and a place for games to develop children's motor skills. In some rooms, it was necessary to install multimedia equipment, as well as to set aside a copy center and divide the streams between it and the library.
Among the difficulties in redevelopment that the students of the Ƶ faced when working on the project: the inconvenient location of the partitions, which is why there is no sense of a coherent space. The authors of the project decided to remove the partitions and build new ones. Another difficulty: the construction of a mezzanine was a prerequisite, which reduced the height of part of the main hall. As a result, the location of the stairs leading to the staff recreation area and the office of the head was changed, which made it possible to make the space more flexible for use and allocate space for the necessary areas.
As for the interior, colored lines on the floor and walls running throughout the space, as well as colored plexiglass inserts in cabinets and on hanging shelves, were chosen as accent elements. In addition, lines from the works of children's writers are written on the walls, for which various fonts are used.
"When designing the children's library space, we focused on rounded, smooth shapes. This can be seen in the form of an exhibition in the main reading room, in the form of lamps and decorative elements, as well as in the design of the walls. It gives the impression of a smooth transition from one zone to another, while the visitor does not run into corners and dead ends. The space is used as much as possible."

The second place in the competition was taken by another bright design project of the library called "Vetka". It was written by students of Ƶ Valeria Noskova and Ekaterina Vasilyeva.
"The main task was to create a more modern and convenient library that would be interesting for children of all ages. We developed the design for the main public use areas: a reading room, a lecture area, a workshop area, a sensory room, as well as for areas intended for staff: recreation rooms, a supervisor's office, and storage rooms. When designing, we decided to create a terrace – the second level of the reading room, from where you can watch the lectures, you can also play a game console and just relax. Hanging origami birds became the main accent of the interior. The main colors of the project are orange, blue and gray. The interior is not boring, but also not too fancy, so as not to distract children from learning new information."
Valeria and Ekaterina are commenting on their project
It should be recalled that this is the third time that students of the Institute of Spatial Environment Design of the Ƶ have been engaged in collaborative design, in which the entire project development process, from pre-project research to the presentation of their ideas, is carried out in close contact with the customer. Students of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design have already developed a game room project for a boarding school in the city of Yenakiyevo in the Donetsk People's Republic in this way, and as part of the federal project "Dream School" they designed interiors for schools in the Leningrad region.
