On measures to prevent telephone and Internet fraud
13 November

According to statistics provided by the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation, the number of crimes committed using mobile communications continues to grow. In 2023, their number increased by 29.7%, reaching 676.9 thousand cases. In the first months of 2024, an increase of 17.6% (179 thousand) was recorded, which emphasizes the urgency of the problem.

To counter fraud, the Prosecutor General's Office, together with the Far Eastern Law Institute of the University of the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation and the Cybervolunteers student association, has prepared a series of social videos. These materials are aimed at raising citizens' awareness of fraudsters' methods and ways to protect themselves from them.

Common fraud schemes:

  • Calls and messages on behalf of charitable foundations. Attackers ask to transfer money to “help those in need.”
  • “Playing the stock market.” Promises of high profits turn into loss of savings.
  • “Call from law enforcement.” You are scared of criminal liability and demand to pay a “fine”.
  • “Bank Security.” Under the guise of account protection, criminals swindle personal data.

How to protect yourself:

  • Don't trust calls or messages from strangers.
  • Never give out personal information or codes from text messages.
  • Real organizations don't ask for money transfers or disclosures over the phone.

These simple measures will help protect you and your loved ones from scammers.
