The 30th season of the Festival of Fashion, Art and Design “Admiralteyskaya Igla” in St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design has come to an end, but we decided to remember how it all started...
Thanks to Alexander Lysenko, the head of the Department of Nanostructured, Fibrous and Composite Materials named after A.I. Meos, who is no longer with us, for 30 years the university has had the honor to host creative young people from all over the world, because he is the inspirer and creator of the competition “Admiralty Needle”.
In 1995, an initiative group of teachers and staff of SPbSUPTD under the leadership of Alexander Lysenko developed the concept of the first student fashion contest in Russia. The name “Admiralty Needle” combined the images of the main instrument of sewing art and the brilliant symbol of the city - the golden spire of the Admiralty.
The idea of the “Admiralty Needle” was effectively supported by Rector Victor Romanov, who headed the university in those years, without which the contest would have been impossible. Mayor Anatoly Sobchak and the Committee for Youth Affairs of the St. Petersburg Mayor's Office also supported the contest and provided financial assistance. In 1995, 87 young designers took part in the Admiralty Eagle. The theme - “The Northern Capital” - was reflected in the concept developed with the participation of the famous Russian fashion designer Tatiana Parfenova. The jury included Viktor Romanov, Tatyana Parfenova, Lyudmila Narusova, Vladimir Bukhinnik, Alexander Vasiliev, and Chong Ki Ja (South Korea).
The final show took place on the stage of St. Petersburg “Music Hall” and gathered more than one and a half thousand spectators. The winners were awarded gold hairpins in the form of sewing needles, made in the workshop of the famous jeweler Andrei Ananov, as well as trips to Europe. In the following years, gold needle brooches became a traditional award for the winners of the contest.
The first contest was a great success, gathering rave reviews from participants and spectators, hundreds of flattering publications in the press. Such a triumphant start set the vector for further development of the contest.
Over the thirty-year history of the contest more than 20000 contestants from 40 regions of Russia and 30 countries of the world took part in the contest and presented more than 15000 collections on the catwalk. The high level of the contest, strict selection of participants, friendly atmosphere, incorruptibility of the international jury, exclusive master classes of leading fashion specialists attract more and more young designers every year.
