Every year, the International Photography Awards honors the most talented photographers who are shaping the world of photography today. One of the features of the competition is its global reach. In addition to the fact that photographers from around the world are invited to participate, the competition also gives its finalists the opportunity to widely showcase their own work. The best images, which have yet to be selected by the jury among the finalists' projects, will take part in the IPA Best of Show exhibition, which will open in New York, and over the next year will be exhibited worldwide in galleries in Italy, Poland, Great Britain, France, Germany, the USA and Canada.
The finalists of the competition, including Luka Snegirev, a student of Ƶ, are now fighting for the opportunity to show their photos to the whole world. The series of portraits "Through the Looking Glass" presented by him at the competition is the result of artistic understanding of the author's communication with people suffering from dementia, who seem to be immersed in their own world, gradually dissolving into another reality, into the looking glass of the real world, until they disappear completely. And the last thing that will happen is that they will forget both you and themselves.
It all started with a personal story, when my grandmother fell ill with coronavirus in 2022, the complication of which was the progressive development of dementia. Dementia is a difficult experience and ordeal for relatives, since, on the one hand, a person is physically close, but emotionally and mentally he is far away. It is very difficult to accept this. I did my series of portraits at the Nursing Home in Gatchina. With the permission of the administration and my family, I took off ten elderly people, including my grandmother. It was one of the hardest shootings for me. While I was working, I talked to them, they told me their stories, but then the nurse came and it turned out that everything in their lives was completely different. Then I realized how far these people were already from reality. It's not noticeable on simple frames, so with the help of a technical technique, I tried to show how they disappear. I put polyethylene in front of the camera and started taking pictures. Due to this, the effect of the character's disappearance is obtained, as if the person dissolves into the void. I dedicated my work to my grandmother and all those who struggle, explore, help, and do not give up. You are far away, but we are close!

With his series of portraits, the student wants to draw attention to the lack of research on this disease, as well as social centers for families who are faced with this problem.

Photography is an art for me, that's why I'm doing art photography. In addition, I believe that a photo should not just be beautiful, it should not be fake, it should make sense. Every project like this is a lot of hard work, so my main mentor, my mother, helps me in everything, thanks to whom I have reached such heights. Many professionals take a very long time to win this competition, but I managed to take third place the first time and at such a young age. I think this is a great opportunity to draw attention to the problem. Now I dream of my own exhibition.
The works of the Ƶ student will be published in the IPA book, the project will also receive information support from the partners of the competition — the editorial offices of the largest magazines and popular photography sites.
