This year the lists of the best universities included 170 universities from 43 regions of the country. St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design has the first position in the country in "Light Industry Technologies". The university was also among the 20 leaders in the field of training "Chemical Technologies".

To include a university in the short-list for a particular direction it is necessary to fulfill two conditions. The first is that the university must enroll students in the 1st year. The second condition is quantitative: the number of students enrolled in all courses in the direction under consideration should not be lower than the threshold value, set in the range from 100 to 200 people, depending on the subject area. This made it possible to exclude HEIs whose contribution to the training of graduates in the fields under consideration is recognized as insignificant. The thresholds depend on the scale of training across the country.

Subject rankings are constructed based on an assessment of the three missions of the university - educational, scientific, and social. The ratings answer the question: which universities provide the best educational and scientific training for students in a particular subject area, taking into account the university's contribution to social development. The ratings are based solely on objective indicators and do not use the results of expert surveys.

When compiling the subject rankings, statistical data from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, bibliometric data providers, organizers of student competitions "I am a Professional", the system of monitoring and analysis of media and social media Scan-Interfax, aggregators of online courses, Informer Technologies data on website traffic, as well as data from social networks YouTube, Telegram, VKontakte were analyzed.
