The world of images of the teacher of Ƶ, artist Alexander Belov
25 April

An exhibition of Alexander Belov, a muralist, associate professor of the Department of Monumental Art at St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design, who has been teaching at the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts for more than 30 years and has been at the University of Industrial Technologies and Design for a year now, is taking place in the lobby of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design.

St. Petersburg artist Alexander Belov is a graduate of the monumental workshop of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin. He can safely be called a multifaceted personality, since he is a universal artist and appeals to all genres and types of fine art. Both monumental creativity and easel painting are available to him. Among the monumental objects are murals of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow (1998), mosaics of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Midrand, South Africa (2002); murals of the Znamensky Cathedral in Kursk (2002); icons for the church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in St. Petersburg (2004-2006), reconstruction of the murals of the Church of Peter and Paul in Peterhof (2010); icons for the Church of the Apostle Philip in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (2012); decoration of the Church of St. Panteleimon in the Great Menshikov Palace, Oranienbaum (2017-2018); iconostasis of the church The Resurrection of Christ in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo (2018), icons of the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Bishop's Courtyard, St. Petersburg (2019). Most of the monumental works are presented in the exhibition in the form of photographic reproductions.

The style and manner of the artist's painting in monumental projects is transformed depending on the era and the context in which the works are located. At times, Byzantine influences are obvious, in other cases, the features of the modern academic school and the personality of the author appear.

In his easel works, Alexander Belov mainly paints in the technique of oil painting, but sometimes in watercolor and other materials. The painter works in various genres. The genre of landscape is represented by images of the Russian countryside. The artist masterfully conveys various states of nature with the help of color and a general tonal solution. A separate series of landscapes was created based on the materials of a trip to China.

A gallery of portrait images of a mother, grandfather, and daughter appears before the viewer. "Portrait of Masha's Daughter" (1989) is distinguished by the culture of pictorial writing, convincing drawing, well-placed accents of color.

The "Portrait of a Mother against a patchwork carpet" (1991) is amazing. There is an elderly woman in the center of the canvas. Her gaze is calm, focused and full of dignity. My overworked hands are on my lap. The patchwork quilt, which is the background, acquires a symbolic meaning. It stands for the kaleidoscope of life with its joys, worries, sorrows and difficulties.

In the painting "Winter" (1995), an old woman with buckets and a rocker, the artist's grandmother, is depicted against the background of a white snow canvas near an old well. There are wrinkles on the face — traces of a life lived. My hands are overworked and hooked. The harsh state of the winter day enhances the overall mood of the canvas, gives a sad shade, touches on the theme of loneliness.

The pinnacle of each artist's skill is an imaginative and thematic composition. The exhibition presents several such works. The theme of youth is revealed in the film "Two" (1992). The canvas depicts young people. It's raining, the wind is raging. A young man and a girl run, protecting themselves with a huge, transparent film. It's like she's saving them from the hardships of this world. The theme of the work is bright, it is a picture of a beautiful youth, about the belief that all obstacles are surmountable.

"Journey through the Milky Way" (2020) depicts Slavs sailing on the sea of life, trying to understand its meaning and overcoming circumstances. This is a kind of Russian traveling the world. There is a symbolic and philosophical subtext in the painting: a man in the sea of life, where water is a liquid, unreliable substance, has no support. The fragile boat on which people sail is shaky. Everything depends on them in the end. The canvas is filled with artistic details and creative finds.

The work "Commemoration" (2023) is a dramatic image depicting the Virgin and child, with soldiers and mothers with memorial candles reading a prayer behind them. The painting symbolizes the commemoration of all the soldiers, they are like children of the Mother of God, like Christ, who innocently suffered, who laid down their lives for a just cause.

The work of Alexander Belov is a serious phenomenon in the art of St. Petersburg at the turn of the XX-early XXI centuries. It reflects the strong traditions of the monumental painting of Academician Mylnikov, artistic taste, deep philosophy, symbolism, signification, as well as the individuality of the master, who brilliantly owns the drawing, a sense of color harmony, formal and plastic thinking. The artist always remains faithful to the high principles of the St. Petersburg classical academic school.

The works of different years presented at the Ƶ exposition show the ideological and philosophical searches of the author. The viewer is presented with a gallery of images reflecting various shades of feelings, types and characters. The author shares his experience with students of the Department of Monumental Art of St. Petersburg State University of Fine Arts, inspiring them to new creative achievements.
