Digital exhibition of SUITD students takes place at the legendary House of Fashion
14 March

This year the legendary House of Fashion in St. Petersburg is celebrating its anniversary. On March 19, 2023 the famous department store in Petrogradka will celebrate its 55th anniversary. Events to mark the anniversary will be held for a whole week from March 13 to 19. One of the memorable events was the opening of the exhibition «Beauty requires 2.0 The History of Soviet Fashion», organized by the University of Industrial Technology and Design together with the Support Fund for Innovation and Youth Initiatives of St. Petersburg. The exhibition tells about the stages of fashion development in the USSR, introduces photo documents, periodicals and iconic items of clothing that have become symbols of the era. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the virtual fitting exhibits of clothing and accessories of those years in augmented reality.

On March 13th the House of Fashion started two exhibitions at once. The guests get acquainted with the history of the House of Fashion itself opened in 1968 in Leningrad, because once upon a time famous actors and musicians wore clothes here, and sometimes the doors of the department store didn’t even close for the night. To go deeper into the fashion history of the last century, the exhibition, in which young digital designers, including students of St. Petersburg State University of Tourism, reconstructed stylish Soviet clothes in a digital space, will allow one to look back in time. Guests of the exhibition will be able to try these digital clothes and hats on themselves using a gadget and see how they would have looked at that time.

The organizers note that through the use of digital technology, viewers will have an immersive experience with the fashion of the USSR, which is much more interesting than looking at photographs. In preparation for the exhibition, the digital designers visualized Soviet garments based on original patterns from Soviet fashion magazines, using a special computer program to design virtual clothing. After creating 3D models of the finished dresses, the designers uploaded their images into an application for virtual fitting. These technologies will allow the visitors of the exhibition at the House of fashion to try on the digital costumes by pointing the phone camera to the special QR code.

The guests of the festival will also be able to watch lectures and fashion shows. Marina Sedova, a famous hat designer and a member of the Union of Russian Designers will tell about the history of the hat-tablet, St. Petersburg designer Tatiana Kotegova will show her exquisite collection, models will also come out to the podium to demonstrate men’s collections of local and foreign brands, which are located in the House of Fashion. Other events include a tour of the renovated department store, the viewing of a documentary about fashion, a coffee championship and an evening of live music.
