A book, existing in the world of hybrid technology became the subject of discussion at the book forum at SUITD

On February 17, 2023 the Saint-Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (SUITD) hosted a Prospective New Book Industry Forum “The birth and life of a book in a world of hybrid technology”, which was included in the business program of the annual festival “Book Lighthouse of St. Petersburg”. The acute topics of the industry transformation were raised at the discussion platform in SUITD.



Nowadays the North-West of Russia in the sphere of training specialists of the media industry and publishing industry is represented by the only institution – the University of Industrial Technologies and Design, which was the organizer of the event. St. Petersburg State University represented by its departament – Higher School of Press and Media Technologies (HSPM) covers the whole range of professions and skills demanded by the book and media industry: from editors and publishers to printers and graphic designers. The history of HSPM is almost eight decades of progressive development in step with the industry. Today the educational process here is a fusion of areas and profiles of training, from traditional to digital, to ensure all stages of book production and its distribution in today’s market.

– The University of Industrial Technologies and Design and the “Book Industry” magazine have engaged in an interesting and useful conversation. It seems to me that the relationship between the web and the paper book is both a fierce contest and a dance of lovers. The topic of our conversation has many shades, but the main thing is that what appears on the shelf or in electronic form is talented, – says Sergey Shargunov, writer, chairman of the Association of Writers and Publishers Union of Russia.


Natalya Lezunova, the headmaster of the Higher School of Press and Media technologies of SUITD, head of the department of Book Publishing and Book Trade, says that printed and electronic books are often contrasted. It is also common to recall events that are similar in context: cinema did not replace theater, but redistributed niches, photography did not replace painting. All these examples may sound optimistic, but it is important to remember that the rule of precedents does not work in culture, which means that making predictions by analogy is not too far-sighted.

– One does not want to give up the forecast altogether, either, and it is difficult to admit to ourselves that we have a poor idea of the image of the future of the book. At the same time, it is the most honest answer: we see how new technologies are sometimes reflected in the book industry in the most unusual ways. Even now the bibliography can be compiled by a machine, a Russian writer on co-authorship with the artificial intelligence creates a new text, and we do not even understand where a human ends and a neural network begins, – the expert believed.


According to journalist and blogger Egor Appolonov, hybrid technology creates positive dynamics. Many novice authors use a variety of Internet resources to promote their work, which, on the one hand, allows them to find their audience and, on the other hand, draw the attention of publishers. It is no secret that publishers look at the success of texts that are published on self-publishing platforms, at successful writers’ blogs, which often becomes a factor in making a decision to publish a text.

– There is no doubt that publishers, talking about the shortage of good texts by Russian authors, have gained the opportunity, guided not only by their expertise, but also by the feedback of the reading audience, to make decisions in which there is less risk - if a text is in demand online, this becomes a certain signal that the text can be well received in paper format as well. In addition, the development of digital technology and the increase in demand for "digital reading" allows publishers to reduce costs by testing certain texts, releasing them first in electronic format so that later - if the text is well received - the paper version of the book can be published. Finally the authors got the possibility to conduct "advertising campaigns 360" - to announce themselves in various Internet resources which, of course, helps them in promoting the text", - Egor Appolonov comments.

Sergey Turko, editor-in-chief of publishing house "Alpina Publisher", speaks about the purpose of modern books: – The book should remain the main source of knowledge today and in future. Information technologies should help to make the book more accessible in any region of the world, but they should not lower the quality bar. Reading is not only entertainment, but also work.

Technologies create useful services, help to successfully promote and publish quality texts in big circulations, - considers Evgeny Kapiev, General Director of "EXMO" publishing house, - on the other hand, these technologies average the creative field. Text production turns into an assembly line. Technologies work for "averaging" of production. This is good for business, but is it bad for literature, the book and the reader?

We say the book is multi-format, and that makes it advantageous over other types of content. The book adapts to the capabilities and demands of the modern reader, who lives in a time pressure and a vast information field. At the same time we see a positive trend - the digital book does not kill the paper book, but expands the audience, the formats of "drafts" and summary help to promote the original. This is a very debatable issue. If social platforms increase people's desire to write, that's a positive trend. Self-publishing has attracted tens of thousands of young authors to writing. The role of the traditional publisher is precisely to make a selection, to select the best. There's another aspect: educating the taste of the readership. Here the way literature is taught at school is important, because it is there that the level of reading competence is formed and established. It is no secret that the level of focus management decreases from generation to generation, so for this audience you cannot offer only complex texts, it is important to be interested and involved. We know that young-adult authors help young people turn to reading as a leisure activity. Then this audience begins to get involved in reading and choosing texts, including classics, and extract meanings from them, understanding the figurative language, – comments Evgeny Kapiev.

To paraphrase Bradbury, “The future is a touchy subject”. And we are like visitors to a new world in his story about the "butterfly effect": we observe a whole panorama of different events, and we do not know which of them will decisively change our future and the future of the book.
